Disadvantages of living alone on island?
I actually do live alone on an island. I have lived on my private island for 10 years, summers only, so there are probably more advantages than disadvantages. But here are the disadvantages: Property taxes are ridiculously high, and despite my annual appeals, 'property is unique' is the answer I'm given (my island is in Connecticut); after that main disadvantage, here are the others in order of importance: No insurance, so if my house (that I built, tiny but suitable to a one acre island) burns down or gets broken into and trashed, or blows down in a hurricane, or a tree falls on it, etc., it is not covered due to inaccessibility issues. There are no fire hydrants. Also, speaking of accessibility, it is difficult to get people to come out and work on issues like solar panels, DC power, solar pump, water, building decks, fixing a broken door, or whatever. I am a single woman and do my best to keep my battery bank charged, my water filtered, and all the other maintenance things one needs to do, but instead of lying around getting a tan or picking blueberries all summer i am usually fixing something, painting something, raking something, cleaning something. Living alone on an island is a lot of work. Maintenance of the boat, keeping ice ready, taking down hornet's nests and watching out for snakes are on the list of disadvantages as well. Mosquitoes at night are brutal. Your feet and fingernails are never completely clean. I get my mail once a week. Every once in a while some drunk a**hole fishermen come peeing on my property and/or fishing off my docks. When I'm swimming a speed boat may come by, even though it's against the law and there are clearly signs posted that say 'no wake'. And if it rains for a few days there's not enough thrust in the solarpowered pump to flush the toilet so you have to haul water up in a bucket. There's probably more to this list but I'm not one to complain! i love living on my island ...
