Yes, if used in the right way. Methadone saved my life and gave me the ability to get off the street and not have to hustle money everyday. It also has alot less intoxicating effects so that you can function at a higher level. It is also a very good pain killer for pain mangagement from what I have heard. But it is important to use methadone the "right way" and get proper therapy while taking it. If you stay at a lower dose and stay away from all other drugs it is incredibly helpful and takes all cravings for opiates away for the most part.

My fiancee and I have a beautiful normally developing 18 month old son that we conceived while on heroin... The law states that heroin use in pregnant women is illegal and harmful to the fetus so we switched to a methadone clinic... Her pregnancy was textbook with no problems, however, she went 5 days past her due date and further inquiry at the methadone clinic we attend informed us that most other women experienced the same thing... I will warn u that the baby will be born addicted to the methadone and few doctors have very much experience in this area resulting in a lot of differences in opinion and a lot of trial and error. We went to a very well known prestigious hospital for women in Indianapolis, IN and unfortunately due to the lac of knowledge on the subject our son was basically a guinea pig for 53 days while doctor and nurses tried different combinations of education to wean him off... Basically they kept him sock and suffering for much longer than he should have... Be very careful of how high the pregnant females dose is. Be very careful and thoroughly honest when selecting the hospital you will deliver your baby through, be honest, its not illegal to use methadone while pregnant as long as its doctor prescribed. And I advise breast feeding and weening the child off over a 4 to 6 month period onto a bottle of formula by first breast feeding then pumping and adding the breast milk to first a little than slightly more amounts of formula until ur just giving the baby formula OR the woman slowly weening herself off methadone during breast feeding because though very little methadone actually goes through the breast milk... It doesn't take very much to effect a baby... Also as a side note... We have been pregnant three times in a two year period while both regularly attending the methadone clinic so it hasn't effected us at all, though studies show that sperm level are reduced and a woman's menstrual cycle are all effected by opiate and opioid abuse... Oh last thing.. For some reason methadone makes it difficult to breast feed so ladies prepare for some painful engorgement and frustration of ur planning to breast feed and always remain under the care of a good knowledgeable doctor anytime a baby or pregnancy is involved

You should never take more than 32mg a day. But in reality you can get by just fine with 8-16mg. You do not need more than that, because that is all it take to completely saturate your opiate receptors! So anymore after that is just a waste of money.

I would NEVER take more than 16 mg in one day... that's asking for side effects like aggravation, irritation, and loss of sex drive.

However, my friend took 13 -8mg pills (over the course of 24 hours) before he went into jail, and he is still alive and kicking (no pun intended lol).

I personally never take over 4 mg per day, and I'm cutting back even more from here.

I usually take my daily dose of 100mgs of methadone and 30mins later I take about 400mgs of dramamine. This usualy intensifies the opiate "warmth" resulting greater euphoria. The key to this is timming. The methadone takes an hour to kick in for me. And 30 mins for the dramamine to kick in. So this allows the combination of the two to kick in at the same time.

if you are going to a clinic everyday, chances are very slim that you will ever quit. Methadone is the most addictive opiate in the world. Your best bet would be to try and get a prescription to a drug called suboxone or subutext. It is a maintenance drug that does the same things as methadone but just without having to go to the clinic everyday. I went to a clinic for years and since I have switched to suboxone my life has changed for the better. But truth be told once someone starts taking a maintenance like these everyday it is very very unlikely to ever stop.

First off it comes in several types, which makes no right answer. As with everything else regarding opiates, the dose plays the largest role in answering the question. If you find methadone that will break down, the size of dose is going to dictate if have an early demise. My question is why would you shoot methadone? There are so many other drugs you can get your altered state of consciousness from. Methadone is primarily a N.R.T. substance, so use it what it is designed for. No lectures but get cleaned up and life up to your potential instead of hiding behind a drug induced state of ambiguity, which you are really going to regret later; if there is a later and from the type of questions you ask, I don't see there being much of a later if you don't start doing some real research prior to having these great thoughts.

You will go into opiate withdrawals for 1-4 months. The reason it is so long is because of the half life methadone has. It is a horrible drug I suggest a one week suboxone taper then it will be about 8 days of Suck but manageable. A big factor in withdrawal from methadone is the amount of time you have been on it. If you have been on it for several days or weeks the withdrawal should not be much worse than a heroin withdrawal. If you are on the methadone for several years, than you are in for a real challenge! Difficulty with sleeping is one long term symptom of withdrawal from methadone after a long time on it. After the initial withdrawals begin to wear off, often difficulty with sleeping is a big problem. The next big factor is the dose you were on. If you are on methadone for maintenance treatment, today the methadone programs often allow very high doses of meth. Sometimes in excess of 200mg. To get off a dose like this, especially if you were on it for a dose, a very slow detox, and taper, especially when reaching less than 10 mg is optimum. When dropping off to nothing, sometime clonidine, a blood pressure med, is given. It seems to help with withdrawal. Actually, if you were not on methadone for a long time, and the dose you were on was not too high, the withdrawals seen with heroin will occur; restlessness, anxiety, insomnia, diarrhea, vomiting, craving for methadone, chills, fever, no appetite, sneezing. These are the most common. It may take a couple of days more than heroin for the withdrawals to pass, 7days, maybe 10 for the symptoms to fully subside. I have heard, that the flu like symptoms with methadone is actually a bit less than a heroin withdrawal. The bottom line is it can be done! I have done it myself after being on it for years. It is difficult, but It is possible to obtain abstinence, even prolonged. I am not a big fan of methadone, there are other treatment modalities using heroin to treat that addiction, but that is another story!
