Black Mambas breed only once a year. Breeding season is in Spring which is around the month of September. Eggs develop for around 60 days inside the female. After that, the female seeks a suitable place (like an abandoned termite mound) to lay its eggs. Around 15 to 25 eggs are laid and guarded aggressively by the Mother. Eggs incubate for around 60 days before hatching. The young ones are about 50 cms in length at birth and are totally independent. They hunt and feed for themselves right from day one. They are also venomous at birth. Though their venom is as toxic as the adults, the quantity is much lower.

How can you tell if a California King Snake is a male or female?
Once the embryos start to form inside the female, she will be come irritable - perhaps even vicious (speaking from experience) if you try to handle her. You will notice, as the eggs start to form, that she develops slight swellings in the lower third of her body - just above her cloaca.
She may also go off her food - or take more food than usual. Once the eggs are formed - she will seek out a suitable place to lay her clutch - a place in the vivarium that is the exact temperature she needs for the eggs to develop and hatch. (Snakester1962 - Supervisor)

How long can you hold your king snake?
It depends on the invidividual snake, how long they are willing to be handled. I advise you handle your snake at least every other day, for about 30 minutes, to keep it tame and used to being handled. Personally, I hold my king snake for several hours, almost every snake. If the snake is tired of being held, you should be able to tell, as the snake will become agitated and crabby. Some may even strike/bite if they get tired of being held. Like I said, it really depends on the snake. Snakes are very different, and even snakes of the same species, coloration, gender, age, and size can have completely opposite personalities.
