Abel Tasman did not discover Australia. Abel Tasman only discovered the island that he named Van Diemen's land (now the state of Tasmania) in 1642. The first known European to discover Australia was Willem Jansz, who landed on the shores of Cape York Peninsula in 1606.

He had two wives. Their names were, (First wife) Claesgie Meyndrix, and (Second wife) Joanna Tiercx.

Abel Tasman was employed by the Dutch East India Company and ordered to explore the oceans of the south-east in order to find a new sea trade route to Chile in South America. Along the way, he explored Tasmania and New Zealand, but came to the incorrect conclusion that they were part of the same continent. He was also the first to explore the islands of Fiji.

On 13 December Tasman sighted land on the north-west coast of the South Island of New Zealand, becoming the first Europeans to do so. Tasman named it Staten Landt on the assumption that it was connected to an island at the south of the tip of South America. Proceeding north and then east one of his boats was attacked by Mâori in waka, and four of his men were killed. Tasman named it Murderers' Bay (now known as Golden Bay) and sailed north, but mistook Cook Strait for a bight (naming it Zeehaen's Bight).

Abel Janszoon Tasman discovered Tasmania, which was named after him. He also explored the coast of Australia and New Zealand. His expeditions contributed to the European understanding of the geography of the southern Pacific Ocean.

Abel Tasman, a Dutch explorer, is credited with discovering Tasmania and parts of New Zealand in the 17th century. He also viewed the west coast of Australia but did not make a detailed exploration of the land.

Abel's first wife supposabley shot herself in the throat. This may not be the right answer but it has appeared in a lot of post all over the Internet. Hope this helped

Other territories which Tasman explored include Mauritius, the northern coastline of Australia and the seas west of the island of New Guinea.

Nobody knows what he died of, but it was probably of an illness of some sort, since he died peacefully at his home on the Far Eastern island of Batavia, in affluent circumstances. He died on 10th October 1659, at the age of 56 - he might have caught a pulmonary illness such as pneumonia, or an epidemic or infection that was going around at the time that 17th Century medical science was unable to treat effectively.
