Is the story of Adam and Eve a creation myth?

Creation stories were told in a time when people did not have a good understanding of how the physical world worked. Without modern science to shed light on such topics as the formation of our planet, and the history of the natural world such things were explained by attributing them to supernatural beings. Various deities were said to have built the world and made all the plants animals that are found there today.

Many modern religions still retain creation stories as part of their belief system.

Why did God not simply forgive Adam and Eve and give them another chance?

The biblical story of Adam and Even is widely misunderstood to represent God as punishing Adam and Eve for eating the fruit of the Tree of Knowledge of Good and Evil. In this story, there were two trees, the fruit of which Adam was forbidden to eat - the Tree of Knowledge of Good and Evil, and the Tree of Life.

Adam and Eve, in their innocent state, were unaware that they must die one day, so eating of the Tree of Life was of no interest to them. They ate of the Tree of Knowledge and learnt to understand good and evil, including that they would one day die. After they had eaten of the Tree of Knowledge of Good and Evil they became like gods (Genesis 3:22: "And the LORD God said, Behold, the man is become as one of us..."), except that they were still mortal.

By eating of the Tree of Life, they would then also be immortal. To make sure that this did not happen, Adam and Eve had to be kept away from the Tree of Life. In Genesis 3:24, God drove out the man and placed at the entrance of the Garden of Eden, cherubim and a flaming sword to keep [block] the way of the Tree of Life. When the story is read carefully, this was not as a punishment, but to ensure that Adam and Eve did not eat the other fruit and become immortal.

What scripture in Genesis supports God showing mercy to Adam and Eve after their sin?

There was no mercy. Satan, Adam, and Eve all received a death sentence. From Genesis 3:15-24 Jehovah tells of how life will be from now on. Death, pain and suffering. But there is a hope, John 3:16 tells us how Gods son Jesus came to Earth to die for our sins so that one day we can gain back what Adam lost.

Are you made in the image of Adam?

Adam was the first born human on earth in 4026BC.

He was perfect in every respect and with the ability of free choice.

Humans were not created in his image but in Gods image.

In other words while we were not a replica of God we were made with the image of his qualities-love , justice, wisdom and power ect.

These are the images we were made in and represent qualities as opposed to what we think of as physical images of him.

The problem was of course that because Adam sinned we inherited that imperfection from him and thus the consequences of that imperfection inherited is all too apparent today in every walk of life in humans.

Why is Cain not listed in Adams genealogy?

One thought:

Adam's genealogy was listed specifically to identify the lineage of the 'Messiah'(anointed one)(Luke 3:23-38), through the line of Jesse's son, King David(Luke 3:31-32)(Isaiah 11:10) (1 Samuel 2:10)(Psalm 2:2), who would one day be sent by God to 'redeem mankind' from the sin of Adam(Romans 5:12+18)(1 Corinthians 15:45)(Isaiah 53:10-12). Cain killed Abel, thus turning away from God, and was counted as wicked, being destroyed in the flood with those who did not remain loyal to their creator(Genesis 4:1-24; 2 Peter 2:5). Cain's line, therefore, died out, and was NOT the Messianic lineage. Instead it came through Adam's third son, Seth. (Luke 3:38)(Genesis 4:25-5:32)

Why did God delegate His authority to Adam?

In the first creation story (Genesis 1:1-2:4a), God created man in his own image and gave him dominion over every living thing. However, in the second creation story (Genesis 2:4b-2:20), Adam was not given dominion over the earth, but was instead made a servant of the earth. Here, the beasts were created as his possible companions, not for him to have dominion over them.

Leon R. Kass (The Beginning of Wisdom: Reading Genesis) says that once we recognise the independence of the two creation stories, we must scrupulously avoid reading into the second story any facts or notions taken from the first, and vice versa. Thus, in reading about the origin of man in the story of the Garden of Eden, we must not say or even think that man is here created in God's image or that man is to be the ruler over the animals. The story of Adam and Eve belongs in the second creation story only, and God did not delegate his authority to Adam.
