Monitoring the plane's basic data readouts via one of the in-flight entertainment channels on landing last month in Melbourne, Australia, at the first hint of touchdown the plane was travelling at 169mph or 272kmh. Taking notes on final approach and then calculating backwards after landing, immediately before touch down I'd estimate it was slowing at about 1mph per second. I didn't keep a record after that - just enjoyed the rapid deceleration and that warm feeling of finally being back home.

People can talk all they want about how the A380 is going to kill Boeing all by itself; I don't see it. That plane makes sense if you're trying to get 500 to 800 passengers between two specific airports. If you wanted to fly 1000 people from Atlanta to Chicago, you could do it in two trips of the A380, or four trips of a Boeing 767. No-brainer, right? Use the A380. I wouldn't for a couple of reasons--it's expensive enough you would only have one, so every time the plane needs maintenance you have to fiddle with the schedule. Also, by flying loads of 250 people at a time you can let people have more options as to when they fly.


There's another problem with the A380 no one's discussing yet: Infrastructure past the flightline. Five hundred passengers--800 if you're flying an all-economy plane--means at least 500 bags, more parking, bigger rental car lots, more restaurants...and don't forget TSA checkpoints. The fact most places don't have enough airport for this plane means it will have somewhat limited impact. It's the kind of plane you want for overseas trips. It's NOT the kind of plane you want to get people from LAX to SeaTac.

Winglets have typically been added to existing wing designs to increase the total lift and reduce the vertices created by the wing tip.

Airports expressed a desire for wingspans not to exceed 80m as this would cause major problems with gate and taxiway designs. The Airbus A380 has a wingspan of 79.65m, so adding winglets would not have been an option and the wing was also designed from scratch to reduce the aerodynamic need. To reduce the wing tip vortices, the A380 wing has 'wing tip fences', small vertical wings that extend above and below the wing tip.

All variants of the Airbus A320 have a maximum operating speed of 563 mph at 36,000 ft.

There are a few engines used for the a380. The one i have calculated it for is the Engine Alliance GP7000. this engine produces 363 kN of thrust. This is equal to 486.79 HP or 493 metric HP
