Alcatraz

The Bird Man of Alcatraz, Robert Stroud, is known to have kept around 300 canaries during his time in prison, although this number varied over the years. Stroud developed a passion for birds and became an expert in their care and breeding while incarcerated. His work with canaries was a significant aspect of his life in prison, even leading to a published book on the subject.

Henri Young served approximately three years in Alcatraz from 1934 to 1937. He was initially incarcerated for robbery and later became notorious for his escape attempt and the murder of a fellow inmate during his time there. His case gained significant attention and raised questions about the treatment of prisoners and the conditions within the prison.

The original Alcatraz prison boat was called the "USS Angel Island." It was used to transport inmates to and from the island prison, which operated from 1934 to 1963. The boat played a crucial role in the logistics of the prison system during its operational years.

Angel Island is approximately 1.5 miles away from Alcatraz Island. The two islands are situated in San Francisco Bay, with Angel Island to the north of Alcatraz. This relatively short distance allows for picturesque views of both islands from each other, as well as from the surrounding areas.

Alcatraz ceased operations as a federal prison in 1963 primarily due to its high maintenance costs, deteriorating facilities, and the challenges posed by its remote location. The rise of more modern correctional facilities with better security and rehabilitation options made Alcatraz less viable. Additionally, the prison's reputation for harsh conditions and infamous escapes contributed to its decline in usefulness as a penitentiary. Ultimately, it was closed and later became a historic site and tourist attraction.
