What do the Amish do if their son is gay?

He's shunned. Plain and simple. They are made outcasts from the People, their friends and relatives cannot speak to them, touch them, or eat at the same table with them during meals. Their goal is to get the person shamed into repenting, or to make the guy feel so lonely he'll leave the community.

The Amish are baptized as adults. Members of the community cannot be shunned unless they are baptized members of the church. Chances are that the child would choose not to stay Amish, would not be instructed for baptism, and he would leave the community WITHOUT being shunned. Now, his family might not be happy with the fact that they left the community but that is a completely different issue.

The purpose of shunning is not to make someone leave the community, but to encourage them to come back. The Amish believe that by being isolated from the rest of the community, someone will see the error of their ways, repent, and come fully back to their place in the community.

Why are Amish people so weird?

I'm Amish myself and my parents split up after a village feud, so during the week i live on the ranch with my mom, and on the weekends i lead a 'normal' non Amish life at my dads. i told my dad its time we gave up being people were not by following the Amish crowd, so he shaved his beard off. Well anyway its peoples choice how they act and dress but i think growing up Amish you aren't given the chance to find yourself for who you are. In a way I'm glad we moved because i realised that there is a lot more to life.

How do the Amish resist popular culture?

The same way you resist Amish culture. There are aspects of it that seem like a great idea (imagine if all of your neighbors pitched in to help you fix your house!? :-D ), but in the end it's just not what you know. You would have to "leave" all of your family and friends. If you weren't "shunned", you would definitely have little in common anymore.

If you're talking about just dabbling in popular culture, they do. They cannot own cars or power tools, but they can accept a ride or borrow and use a power tool (if you hire Amish to do work on your home for example). Just like you can go to an Amish stand and buy their breads, jams and organic produce or get an Amish quilt.

Are the Amish monotheistic or polytheistic?

Amish are monotheistic as are other Christian groups.

Why is the Amish a subculture?

The Amish generally independently rule over their own selves, with elders being the power that be, over the Amish members.

It is small net work of communities, that general isolate themselves from outside society into nearby grouping of farms, and interact on daily bases among each other.

Despite the fact that they own large tracts of land, and they live in middle class housing, they live a very merger poverty line existence.

That there are laws on the books in both the USA and Canada, that treat them different than the common citizen, that Amish have swayed governments to treat them as subculture.

The Amish treat their animals the way any farmer treats theirs. They feed them and give them a place to stay, Everyone is different and some are better than others. Just like other people treat their pets. You can't force anyone into a mold, we are people and have different responsibilities.

People forget that animals are just that, they don't have eternal souls or a spirit. We don't see animals worshiping a God or even looking for God.
