I'm not sure what their historical views on adoption are, but in the two Amish communities we have lived in Adoption was becomming increasingly accepted. Many couples who could not have children naturally were becoming foster parents with the hope of being able to adopt children. I beleive historically, they have been hesitant to become foster parents due to requirements such as the requirement to obtain a photo ID. At least that had been an issue in one Amish community in Illinois where we resided.

They have to follow all the laws that everyone else does. Additionally, there are laws that affect them but not others, such as having a bright reflective triangle on the back of their buggies.

Besides that, they voluntarily agree to "laws" of their "Ordnung" or church. These "laws" pertain to dress and conduct unique to their faith, including the well known practice of not using electricity.

For the same reason anyone else might take a door off their house. It might need planed or sanded, or otherwise repaired. Or they might be trying to air out the house in springtime.

There is no cut and dry answer to this question, both genders are compelled not to seek mates outside their faith, especially outsider English people in fear they will leave their Amish society.

You can only date as Amish person another baptized member, to be baptized is to make a verbal contract obligation to the community and Amish society to stay.

But do Amish woman and men date outsiders, yes, mostly in secrete.

If it is known that the Amish person is dating a outsider, everything will be factor in letting such Amish person continue, from the desire the outsider interested in joining, to the Amish persons parents, but the greatest determination factor will come down from highest elder in the community.

If a Amish person regardless of their age, does something like date a outsider, against the denial the elder, they first will be shunned and if it continues excommunicated with nothing and no family ties.

I have read something like 85% choose to join church and stay "Amish". I have lived in two Amish communities and I'd say that figure sounds correct. Some families have high retention rates, other families seem to go English.

I think the best condolence message you can give is "You are in our thoughts and prayers." If that is too generic write something from your heart. Lots of people use "I'm sorry for your loss" but how can you be sorry if you didn't cause the loss? I've spoken to many people and they don't understand how people can say I'm sorry for your loss. Something from the heart is always appreciated.

No, in most cases they are sent to the Amish church that acts as school house, for short school day so they can still do their daily chores.

They are taught only the 3Rs, up to the 8th grade, by a teacher who also has only an 8th grade education.
