The "strongest" and potentially most dangerous antibiotic that is usually reserved only for life threatening infections and given in a hospital setting orally or through iv is vancomycyin. All antibiotics regardless of strength attack certain bacterial strains so one that is regarded as stronger will not be effective in some conditions where a lesser antibiotic that does treat that condition likewise attacking that susceptible bacteria would. -John

Like any antibiotic, amoxicillin will help to break down the infection in your tonsils, but it will certainly not have immediate relief. In general, it takes between 5-10 days of taking amoxicillin to be rid of strep throat. For an almost immediate relief of the pain I would first try taking some pain pills (Tylenol, Ibuprofen, Alive, ect..). Another good remedy is to make a hot cup of green tea with some honey in it. The green tea helps reduce the swelling for quite a while. This seems to relieve a lot of people when they have strep throat.
