This is a potent antibiotic, and therefore should be given only when prescribed by a doctor. The normal dosage for children is 10 - 20 mg per pound of body weight, but it is to be divided into three doses a day. Also, do not give with fruit juice or carbonated beverages because the acid in these beverages can destroy the drug. It is advisable however, to give with a small amount of food to prevent stomach upset. Most importantly though, keep in mind amoxicillin is a penicillin drug, and if your child has never taken any of the penicillin drugs, s/he needs to be monitored very closely after taking this med to be sure there are no allergic reactions, which can be fatal if not treated in time. Some of the signs to to watch for are rash, itching, hives, swelling of the face, tongue and throat. If you see ANY of these signs, call 911 or take your child to the nearest emergency room immediately.

As an ex pharmacy tech...amoxicillin is one of the fast movers in the pharmacy it's quite difficult to check it's shelf life but we normally try to keep anti bi for up to one year , 2 years for the most but if it's mixed 10 days ..and it should be on the shelf THROW OUT your amoxicillin! For two reasons: ALL antibiotics should be taken until the bottle is empty. If there are some left over, whoever took it 4 years ago, didn't finish it, which can mess up your immune system. PLUS, if you take it now even if it were good, you won't get the full dose. AND it's NOT good! P.S. Metronidazole (Flagyl) and Penicillin, Tetracycline or other antibiotics are frequently prescribed together for Small Intestine Bacterial Overgrowth. Expect GI side effects, but from personal experience SIBO can be so terrible (like Crohn's) that there is psychological relief in knowing the drug side effects mean the regime is working. Intestinal infections such as SIBO are not permanently curable, but treatable with this combination of drugs (designed to treat both aerobic and anaerobic bacteria), and will need to be repeated when symptoms reappear. One month after it's expiration date means that the drug no longer is as strong as it was before. It slowly degrades over time and once approximately 20% has degraded it is considered expired.
