Amoxicillin is made of amoxicillin. It is an antibiotic similar to penicillin.

Typically other drugs would be used for a general infection ..Your Dr may order a 2 day culture of your urine specimen to determine the exact bacteria causing the infection ... this drug may be the specific one necessary to attack that specific bacteria found in that urine culture.

This is a potent antibiotic, and therefore should be given only when prescribed by a doctor. The normal dosage for children is 10 - 20 mg per pound of body weight, but it is to be divided into three doses a day. Also, do not give with fruit juice or carbonated beverages because the acid in these beverages can destroy the drug. It is advisable however, to give with a small amount of food to prevent stomach upset. Most importantly though, keep in mind amoxicillin is a penicillin drug, and if your child has never taken any of the penicillin drugs, s/he needs to be monitored very closely after taking this med to be sure there are no allergic reactions, which can be fatal if not treated in time. Some of the signs to to watch for are rash, itching, hives, swelling of the face, tongue and throat. If you see ANY of these signs, call 911 or take your child to the nearest emergency room immediately.

As an ex pharmacy tech...amoxicillin is one of the fast movers in the pharmacy it's quite difficult to check it's shelf life but we normally try to keep anti bi for up to one year , 2 years for the most but if it's mixed 10 days ..and it should be on the shelf THROW OUT your amoxicillin! For two reasons: ALL antibiotics should be taken until the bottle is empty. If there are some left over, whoever took it 4 years ago, didn't finish it, which can mess up your immune system. PLUS, if you take it now even if it were good, you won't get the full dose. AND it's NOT good! P.S. I checked the MSDS on my generic amoxicillin and it doesn't have NSAID - most probably don't, if not all. Now the question is are NSAID and Amox. compatible pharmacologically.
