Andrew Jackson

The movement created by Jackson on his election was an authentic democratic movement dedicated to powerful, radical, egalitarian ideals for white men. Its origins go back to the 1700's, the anti federalists of the 1780's and the 1790's, and from the Jeffersonian Republicans. Another cause was also out of social and economic changes of the early 19th century. There was also a tendency to remain with the 18th century elitist assumptions of the natural aristocracy of propertied men as well as the starting of the 19th century capitalism of corporation's, banks, and other moneyed investments to become the new rich. This lead to the government policy of favoring centralized top down forms of economic development that aided men of means but deepened the inequality of others without the money. A redirection of economic policy resulted and reformers fought to abolish property requirements for voting and office holding. His basic policy was to rid the government of class bias and dismantle the top down credit driven engines of the market revolution. His war on the Second Bank of the United States set the tone. This was an effort to remove the few wealthy unelected private bankers from the nation's economy. To aide the farmer the government began a program of Indian removal from lands that could be sold and gave settler's preemption rights. The ideology was aimed at the voters who felt harmed or cut off from the new markets and proclaimed a political culture predicated on white male equality and had a social vision that any white man would have a chance to secure his economic independence, live free as he saw fit, and live under a system of government cleansed of privilege.

Andrew Jackson had four different Secretaries of State during his Presidency: John Q. Adams, Edward Livingston, Louis Maclane and John Forsyth.

The expansion of women's rights was not an issue in Jackson's day. I do not know that

he ever took any position for or against . I am pretty sure that he would not have favored

any attempts to remove the rights that women had.

Supporters portrayed Jackson as a common man. They were initially known as the Democratic-Republicans, but later simplified to the Democratic Party. They accused Adam's administration of corruption and pointed out how he was out of touch with the common man.

They were known as his "kitchen cabinet". They included his wife's nephew, Andrew Donelson, who served as his personal secretary, and newspaper editors, Frances Blair and Amos Kendall, and old soldier friend Wm Lewis.

He was not rich, not from one of the old , established American families. He had had

little education and had no connection with the founding fathers, who fomented the

American revolution, conducted the Revolutionary War and wrote and ratified the

US Constitution. All of the presidents before him were "in on the ground floor", so to

speak, either founding fathers or in the case of Quincy Adams, the son of a founding

father, and all had ties and position in the administration that came before them.

Jackson came out of nowhere( the West) and had not ties with any previous president.

He ordered the withdrawal of all government deposits from the Bank and placed the funds in smaller state banks

Yes, I believe he was the first president to use the veto power. *To contradict the previous statement, there were 9 instances prior to the General's term in which the veto power was used. However, noting that during from 1828 to 1837 the veto power was used 12 times... Well, you draw the inferences.

Spain was supposedly in control of Florida, but they did not have much authority over the Indians who lived there and who, encourages by the British, made frequent raids North into Georgia. President Monroe ordered Jackson to guard the borders, but he grew tired of seeing the raiders escape back into Florida and so with in after them, against orders.

Limited but absolute control of the US government.

Jackson's reputation as the champion of the common man was unharmed, and it showed that he was committed to safeguarding the public's interests from the threat of private wealth and an ever-larger central government..

As a military officer he virtually acquired Florida by force of arms from Spain and defended New Orleans against the British. As President he fought the rewarding of government positions to party loyalists, fought against the US Debt and the US Banking system and established the position that an individual state could not nullify the laws of the land. He was a strong and competent President, but his treatment of the Native Americans was shameful.

He was elected president in 1828. And at his inauguration over 10,000 people came from every state. They all crowded into Washington DC just to watch Andrew Jackson (also know as "old hickorys") inauguration.

Jackson easy success at overpowering Spanish opposition to his forays into Florida and

his taking of the forts at Pensacola and St. Augustine, convinced them that it was futile to try to hold on to their territory in Florida and along the gulf coast and west of there.

Consequently the Secretary of State, Adams, found it easy to negotiate a treaty with

Spain to cede Florida and all territories west, clear to the Pacific, to the US in exchange

for a few million dollars.

He was a lawyer

In Jackson's own words: "The Bank, Mr. Van Buren, is trying to kill me, but I will kill it!" And kill it he did. In 1832, the Bank had to be re-chartered, and because Jackson's intentions were known, the Bank became a major election issue. But when the time came, Jackson vetoed the charter and disbanded the bank. The funds went to local banks and western "pet banks."

The rich and well-connected had run the country since its beginning and for the most part liked it that way. Jackson represented the Western settlers, many of whom were recent immigrants and relatively poor and uneducated . The Eastern establishment did not want them to gain political power , so they feared what Jackson might do and did what they could to keep their own power base in tact.

Until Andrew Jackson, only land owners could vote. Jackson was a president of the people. He had many former army members that had served under him in the War of 1812 go home to vote for Jackson.

Jackson had military experience as a general and a military governor in Florida. He didn't have any civilian experience.

Andrew Jackson was born in the Waxhaws area on the border straddling North and South Carolina. His exact birthplace is unknown, but Jackson claims that he was born just inside of South Caroline. At age 13, he joined the military as a courier and served in the Revolutionary War.
