Animal Testing

There are several types of animal experimentation. Some experiments simply observe behaviors, where others introduce medications, toxins, viruses, or products to see what effect they will have on the animal.

351 Questions

Do animal Testing still exist?

in some places, in the United states it is.

Cons of animal testing?

the disadvantages are:

  • It could harm the animals
  • People might not want to test on animals so as a business you could lose staff
  • animals could become dangerous
  • animal testing could be run as a business so more intent on making money than actually caring for the animals
  • Animals could be mistreated

The biggest disadvantage of animal testing is the harm, pain and confinement of the animal.

The biggest disadvantage of animal testing is that the animals used for testing are not humans and any results derived from animal testing may or may not be useful to humans. I can be a matter of the animals suffering for nothing.

Another important thing to keep in mind about animal testing is the frivolous nature of the substances tested on animals. Most animal testing is not for the purpose of evaluating lifesaving drugs but for outright commercial purposes, such as cosmetics, food additives to make something keep its puffiness or enhance its color, or an ingredient added to a product to enable marketing to call it new and improved when in fact it doesn't work any better it's just a new color or texture.

Why is animal testing being done?

The idea that animals should never be used for testing is not reasonable. The idea that animals need to be foolishly abused duringtesting is also not a reasonable stance.

Humans need to test certain products and medicines on creatures to see if they interact in a favorable manner. This can ONLY be done on animals or other humans.

The conditions for most animal testing is very humane. The extremist groups do get the more "touchy feely" thinkers to contribute a great deal of money to fringe groups such as PETA so that the executives can live a very nice lifestyle. PETA is a favorite of mine because they don't "fence animals in, they fence the world out". They are known for some very unusual concepts. There current SAVE THE WHALE campaign featuring heavy females is just one such extremist example of cruelty to humans that the group regularly takes part in.

Should animals be used for medical research?

I think that it's wrong since they can do a lot of other things to test medicine. They can make pieces of skin without using real skin. Science has come far and there are alternatives. But it's more expensive so most companies don't want to.

I think it isn't right ,however sometimes it has to be done:(

I am for that. I would want items tested on animals before humans. Animals are not equal to humans. The idea that we can not use them for research is appalling to me. It cheapens the value of us as a species.

Personally I wish it wasn't so, but as far as I know they don't have alternatives other than humans themselves which isn't always permitted.

Personally I feel that people should volunteer to do it despite the risks, as were more capable of communicating pain and side effects, of course some medical research is real raw and would undoubtedly kill but I still belive people would volunteer. I expect theres wide opinion on this question so keep an eye on the discussions board! X

As stated earlier personaly I wish it wasnt done however with that said I can understand that testing af drugs procedures e.t.c gets done with animals. and saves more animals and peoples lives then are lost. However I think it is absolutely wrong for cosmetics and similar vanity rubish to be tested on animals.

Animals are used for research for ethical reasons. Animals are first used in medical research so that humans are not harmed. Animals are used in other research to understand their physiology such as why do bears hibernate and how.
No, they should not. Nowadays humans have much greater scientific breakthroughs and research and do not need to still use animal tests as much as they once believed they did. True - as it is, some animal experiments have benefited us and some also have not, e.g. cigarettes were tested on rabbits and were deemed to be safe BUT what the scientists didnt know was that humans are NOT like rabbits and we can't break down nicotine like they can. They can break it down 60 times faster than humans and this dramatically reduces the amount of nicotine Dependent receptors in their brains, meaning they don't get addicted to it any where near as badly as we do. There are many more of those kinds of stories.

Basically, rationality begs the question: why would you do that when it is not always reliable and will probably need human tests anyway?

It is a fact that we would not have most of the medical knowledge we do today if we hadn't done it in the past, but again I see no reason for it to continue other than humans trying to keep their 'control' at what they seem to think is the top of the chain.

Only you can decide whether you agree or not but being informed is necessary for your decision to be right for you.

How many lives have been saved from animal testing?

There's no knowing exactly. Any answer would be an estimate. You'd have to figure out all of the things kept off the market because they were found dangerous during testing, and then estimate how many people would have used them, and how many of those people would have died from their use.

A lot of guesswork at each point.

Why do they use rats for animal testing?

In the U.S., the number of rats and mice used have been estimated at 15-20 million. Mice share 99% of their genes with humans. Rats and humans respond similarily to many medications, chemicals, etc.

What are some words to describe animal testing?

The animal metaphor test is used to perform behavior analyses on humans. It uses art therapy and insight therapy and has become popular throughout the psychological community.

How is animal testing cruel?

No, despite what PETA says, the testing today is necessary in research. Such things as diabetic medications, new therapies for drug resistant viruses, and other medical research is vital to today's medical community.

Animal cruelty is torturing animals for kicks. This serves no purpose than to inflict pain on an animal for no reason. Animal testing is the second step in determining whether a drug or therapy will work on humans. The third step is clinical human trials.

Should animal testing be banned?

I believe we should value each and every animal's life as if they are human, because they share some of the same organs, facial and body features, they have feelings, they have emotions, they have a brain, and can catch on pretty quick let alone are able to detect cancers, ailments, and how to calm those suffering with mental and emotional illnesses. I don't agree with companies who still rely on animals to test their products on or run experiments. Because if things were switched, you couldn't possibly get a human to agree to being tested and experimented on (although it has happened in the past with minorities, almost simultaneously and against their will.) However, I am for the experiments made on INVASIVE species of animals, rodents, and other animals who pose a serious documented and evaluated threat to the population and the earth. But animals, who deserve their second chances at life like humans, no.

What are religious arguments against animal testing?

Many cultures think some animals are sacred for example:

Egyptians: Cats

Hindu/ Indian : Beef

and they don't eat anything from the animals either so if something was sacred to us then we wouldn't want things tested on them.

Should there be a law on animal testing?

I'm sorry to say after much research that there are not any and that unless someone makes some there are none, but good news there arn't any for it either

-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Yes, there are laws requiring manufacturers of products classified as pesticides to conduct animal testing and properly label side effects of chemicals on products before selling it. The Enviornmental Protection Agency (the organization that mandates this law) considers many household items pesticides such as bug spray and anti bacterial and anti microbial products.

It has never been approved as a law.

What is a rebuttal on animal testing?

Animal testing upsets most people because the animals have no say in the experimentation. An animal can't say "that hurts" or "stop". On the other hand, humans can and almost everyone finds human testing repulsive...

How much medicine is wasted on animals testing?

not mew. the most or the average money wasted on animal experimentation every day is up to $400000. some times its way higher

What are good things about animal testing?

Animals are built with the same basic parts as humans so scientists can test whether medicines and chemicals are harmful or safe before the risk the lives of humans.

Animals are in abundance, so scientists can perform larger numbers of tests that could be done on people at a cheaper price.

Life saving drugs are tested on animals and it is a fact that the white rat has saved more lives than the calling of 911.

Without animal testing, the cure for polio would not exist. Neither would successful blood transfusions or organ trasplants. Diabetics would suffer or die.

In some cases, animal testin IS cruel, but it would be more cruel to test new drugs on little children or to let people die because there is not enough information about a drug.

Animal rights campaigners say we don't need new test, because we have enough information already. We wouldn't have that information without animal tests and many new infections that need to be treated appear each year.

Why is animal testing bad?

Animal testing is one of the many things that people hate. It can also mean extinction to a certain species if not taken seriously. Although animal testing for medicines helped us, people are doing the exact same tests all over again! And people who think that the same animal testing today as a long time ago is a good idea, then you guys are seriously messed up!

Why does animal testing take place?

It Takes Place Because They Need To Find New Ways Of Curing People And Need To Know Whether Things Are Safe For People.

Where can you find animal testing graphs?

Animal testing graphs on how many die and get injured go to ..... not graphs but figure which will help.... http://www.animalport.com/animal-testing/animal-testing-facts-figures.html

What are the bad things for animal testing?

There are many harmful effects of animal testing. Namely, animals experience prolonged suffering and death. Also, companies continue to participate in animal testing as long as people fail to speak out against it.

How is animal testing accurate if animals are different from humans?

animal testing helps scientists to both cure and invent medicines and products to help both humans and animals.vaccinations for animals are tested and when perfected, help animals to live longer and healthier testing on animals benefits humans for both cosmetic and medicinal reasons, moreso medical. cures for many diseases and preventions have been uncovered through animal testing i am in support of animal testing as long as it is for gain, what is wrong with it? the natural order of things is man over beast and i belive that is the way things should remain.

What do christians believe about animal testing?

Ask someone at stores where you buy your stuff were the natural/products not tested on animals! Medicine is slightly acceptable but cosmetic testing is down right wrong.

What is a clever title for animal testing?

Clever titles for animal rights news articles can be tricky to come up with. One could be 'Taking Control of Dog Fighting in America' would be a catchy title.

Where are some of the animal testing labs?

Pretty much anywhere that needs products or compounds tested. Universities have animal testing for a variety of purposes, to evaluate the effect of nutritional and behaviorial protocols, along with potential drug testing. Also universities have animal-testing to develop genetic modification protocols. Corporations also conduct animal testing. Drug companies have to prove that their drugs are safe on animals before the FDA will allow them to test the drugs on humans. Cosmetics companies also have labs to test the amount of irritation and toxicity of their products. Pet food companies also conduct testing to determine the best formulas for animal food products. While cosmetics companies have come under fire for the amount of suffering inflicted on animals for the testing of products which seem to have minimal health risks or benefits to people, remember that the majority of animal testing puts animals in no more pain and suffering than if they were raised for food. Laboratory animals are typically euthanized at the end of their productive lifespans, usually by carbon dioxide gas or injection, much as you would put down a pet.
