Ankylosaurus

All animals have water in their body, not only in the blood but in the cytoplasm, or jelly-like filling, of each and every cell. However, all animals lose some water every day, not just to urination but also to evaporation through its breath. To replenish lost water, nearly all animals drink. Ankylosaurus lived in an environment where water was usually available, so they most likely drank regularly. One of Ankylosaurus's relatives, Sachania, lived in the Gobi Desert of Asia, and it does show adaptations for water conservation. Specifically, it appears to have had glands next to its nostrils that would have allowed it to expel excess salt without having to urinate, thus minimizing how often it urinated and also conserving water. Even Sachania, though, probably didn't get all of its water from food and had to drink every few days at least.

The name Ankylosaurus means "fused lizard." This refers to the fact that many of the bones in the skeleton of Ankylosaurus were fused together in order to strengthen them enough to support the Ankylosaurus's heavy armor.

Ankylosaurus was an herbivore, or plant eater. Their heads were very low to the ground, only about three to four feet high, and thus they probably ate low growing plants. Their teeth were designed for cutting vegetation, and they couldn't chew, so they probably ate relatively tender plants that were easy to digest. Plants that existed at the same time and place as Ankylosaurus include ferns, horsetails, early flowering plants, conifers, cycads, palm trees, and ginkgoes, but they probably couldn't reach the leaves of the latter four.

Ankylosaurus didn't live in the desert. They lived on the coastal plains of western North America between 66.5 and 65.5 million years ago. The environment was warm, humid, and subtropical, with wet and dry seasons.

However, some other ankylosaurs, which were relatives of Ankylosaurus, did live in the Gobi Desert of Asia. Why they lived there is difficult to say. It's similar to asking why camels live in the desert.

There were many different species of ankylosaur, and each had its own size and weight. They ranged from the Minmi, at only 6.6 feet in length to the largest species, Ankylosaurus, which was 25 to 30 feet long and weighed 6.5 tons.

An Ankylosaurus's club was made up of two round balls of bone at the end of the tail. The bones were probably covered in a layer of keratin, the same material in human hair and fingernails or a rhino's horn.

Ankylosaurus's main defense was its nearly impenetrable, bony armor plates that covered its head, neck, back, sides, and tail. Its secondary defense was a tail club that could have been used lethaly against a predatory dinosaur. Because they were so formidable, adult Ankylosaurus didn't have any predators.

The ankylosaurus was an herbivore, so it interacted with plants by eating them, and also fertilizing the soil with its dung. They drank water and breathed the air. As for interactions with other animals, they were too formidable to be prey and were not hunters, so nobody is aware of any significant interaction between them and other animals.

In Alberta, Ankylosaurus fossils have been found in the Scollard Formation. The Scollard Formation is located about halfway between the cities of Edmonton and Calgary. The Scollard Formation also holds fossils of other dinosaurs, such as T-rex, Triceratops, and Pachycephalosaurus.

An ankylosaurus' belly is the softest part on the whole animal. This is the only place to kill one. Even the eyes have a bony eyelid! The problem is that the dinosaur protects himself by crouching down.

Ankylosaurus was a large herbivore, and like large herbivores today, it probably spent most of its time foraging. It is unknown whether they lived in herds or not, or whether they took care of their young. Because they are only known from fossil bones, it is hard to determine much about their behavior.

Iguanodon lived between 126 and 125 million years ago in Europe.

Deinonychus lived between 115 and 108 million years ago in North America.

Oviraptor lived about 75 million years ago in Asia.

Triceratops lived between 68 and 65.5 million years ago in North America.

Tyrannosaurus lived between 67 and 65.5 million years ago in North America.
