What were the discoveries the Apollo program made?

The Apollo program made several key discoveries, including the first manned missions to land on the Moon, collecting lunar samples, studying the Moon's geology, and gaining insights into the origin and history of both the Moon and Earth. The program also advanced our understanding of space travel, technology, and human capabilities in space.

What year did the Apollo space program start and what was the purpose?

The Apollo program began to be seriously considered as soon as Russian Yuri Gagarin had become the first man to enter space in 1961. His flight provided the impetus for the US to fast track its space program particularly because this was the time of the Cold War between the US and USSR. The goal was to be the first to land on the moon. While the Russians had scored a number of space firsts, the US was determined to not let this one slip past. There were also a number of scientific studies performed, including geological studies. The last Apollo mission, Apollo 17 was primarily a geological mission and included geologist Harrison Schmitt in the landing crew.

The first manned flight to the moon, that did not include a landing, was in December 1968 and the first manned landing was on July 20 1969 when Neil Armstrong of Apollo 11 became the first human to walk on the moon and indeed on any place other than earth.

How was Apollo moon landing faked?

There is no evidence to suggest that the Apollo moon landings were faked. Multiple lines of evidence, such as photographs, rock samples, and independent observations, confirm that the missions did take place. Conspiracy theories suggesting the landings were faked have been debunked by experts in various fields.

Who were the first three men to walk on the moon?

The first two men to set foot on the moon were Neil Armstrong and Edwin (Buzz) Aldrin. This was the first Apollo Mission on July 21, 1969. Michael Collins was the third guy in that mission, but because he was the Command Module Pilot and didn't actually set foot on the lunar surface. The third person to walk on the moon was Pete Conrad (Alan Bean was the fourth). This was on the second Apollo Mission on November 19, 1969.

Which was the First vehicle driven on moon by man?

The first vehicle driven on the moon by man was the Lunar Roving Vehicle (LRV), also known as the "Moon buggy." It was used during the Apollo 15 mission in 1971 and allowed astronauts to explore the lunar surface in a more efficient manner.

How many people have been on the moon?

Twelve men have walked on the Moon, all US astronauts of the Apollo program.

They were :

Apollo 11

(July 20, 1969)- Neil Armstrong and Edwin "Buzz" Aldrin (the first men to walk on the Moon)

Apollo 12 - Charles Conrad, Jr. and Alan Bean

Apollo 14 - Alan Shepard Jr. and Edgar Mitchell (Shepard was also the first US 'man in space' in 1961).

Apollo 15 - David Scott and James Irwin

Apollo 16 - John Young and Charles Duke, Jr.

Apollo 17 - Eugene Cernan and Dr. Harrison Schmitt

(Cernan was the last man to walk on the moon on December 14, 1972)

---

On each of the 6 missions, one astronaut orbited the Moon while two others went to the surface. On Apollo 8 and Apollo 13, three astronauts made a lunar orbit. James Lovell was on both of these flights, having traveled to the moon twice and never walked on it. So there are 12 men who walked on the Moon, and 12 more who flew there but never landed there.

Why have only men traveled to the moon and not women?

woman are not scared maybe there are women who are affaid going to space because they feel intimedadted but there are more men in space than girls maybe they want to do something else we have equal rights to the men and we could do things better we are the same and feel natural playing football with men or basketball e.c.t that's all

What was the name of the rocket America landed on the moon?

The first manned landing on the moon was made by the Apollo 11 lander called the 'Eagle' - as in the famous words "the Eagle has landed." Subsequent Apollo missions used landers with other names. These were:

Intrepid (Apollo 12)

Antares (Apollo 14)

Falcon (Apollo 15)

Orion (Apollo 16)

Challenger (Apollo 17)

When was Apollo missions 12 13 14 15 and 16?

Who was First man to land on moon?

The first men to land on the moon was, Commander Neil A. Armstrong and Edwin "Buzz" Aldrin Jr. Another person who went out in space with them was Michal Collins, who orbited the moon while the other two went down to it.

Neil Alden Armstrong was born August 5, 1930; he is an American aviator and former astronaut, test pilot, aerospace engineer, university professor, and United States Naval Aviator. He was the first person to set foot on the Moon.

Buzz Aldrin or Edwin Eugene Aldrin, Jr. was born January 20, 1930; he is an American mechanical engineer, retired United States Air Force pilot and astronaut who was the Lunar Module pilot on Apollo 11, the first manned lunar landing in history. On July 20, 1969, he was the second human being to set foot on the Moon after Commander Neil A. Armstrong.

Michael Collins was born October 31, 1930 in Rome, Italy; he is a former American astronaut and test pilot. He orbited the moon while Neil Armstrong and Buzz Aldrin walked on the moon.

Who took the picture of the man on the moon?

Many people don't know, but the first footage of a man on the moon ( Neil Armstrong) was taken by the camera on the side of the lunar module Eagle. This was able to be deployed by Armstrong just before exiting. After that, Armstrong photographed Aldrin, the second man on the moon with a hand-held camera. There were also five other missions where the same methods were used to photograph a total of twelve astronauts on the moon's surface.

Third man to walk on the moon?

Charles "Pete" Conrad was the third man to walk on the moon during the Apollo 12 mission in November 1969. He was the commander of the mission and spent a total of about eight hours on the lunar surface.

What happened in project Apollo?

The Apollo program was a series of missions by NASA in the 1960s and 1970s that aimed to land humans on the moon and bring them back safely to Earth. Apollo 11 achieved this goal on July 20, 1969, when astronauts Neil Armstrong and Buzz Aldrin became the first humans to walk on the moon. A total of 12 astronauts landed on the moon during the Apollo program, with the final mission, Apollo 17, taking place in 1972.

What effect did Apollo 1 have on Space Exploration?

Apollo 1 really brought home the danger inherent to space travel. Prior to the A1 fire NASA had grown almost complacent i ntheir safety methods. Apollo 1 showed them that, regardless how inocuous a test may seem, spce travel is dangerous.

How did the astronauts get to the Moon and back?

In very broad terms:

  1. The crew launched atop a Saturn V rocket into Earht orbit, which takes 8-10 minutes
  2. From Earth orbit they fired the rocket on the Apollo Commond/Service Module (CSM) for less than 10 minutes
  3. They then coasted to the moon, a trip that lasts about three days.
  4. Once they got near the moon the turned around and fired the CSM engine again to slow back down, entering Lunar orbit
  5. While in Lunar orbit two members of the crew would enter the LunarModule (LM), close the hatch, disconnect from the CSM, and use the LM's Descent Engine to slow down and then land on the moon's surface.
  6. Once the surface missions was complete the crew would fire the LM's Ascent Engine to return to Lunar orbit.
  7. In Orbit, they would join up with the CSM which had stayed up there and the two crew members would reenter the CSM and close the hatch.
  8. The LM was then disconnected and, as planned, allowed to crash into the moon (the shockwaves of the crash were used to analyze the interior of the moon via science packages the crew left behind on the surface)
  9. The crew would fire the CSM engine to exit Lunar orbit
  10. They coasted, once again, all the way back to Earth
  11. Once they got close to Earth they disconnected the Service Module, exposing the heat shield on the bottom of the Command Module.
  12. They entered earth's atmosphere and floated down to Earth under parachutes, landing in the ocean
  13. They were then retrieved from the ocean by Navy helicopter and flown to a nearby Navy ship upon which they would sail home.

How many US astronauts have explored the moon?

The lunar module (Eagle) carried two people.

Why was the Apollo 13 mission considered a successful failure?

Apollo 13 was a failure in the sense that the mission did not land on the moon or achieve any of its mission goals. It was successful because it showed how people can work together to bring about a successful outcome to a situation that looked impossible. The feat of bringing home a crew of three in a spacecraft that was largely disabled through the rupture of its oxygen tanks and damaged electrical systems was a worldwide effort by various technical people, and created universal concern for the astronauts wellbeing.

How many Apollos are there?
