What Are Researchers Trying to Learn About Lupus?Current lupus research projects include:
  • A Specialized Center of Research in Lupus at the University of Virginia School of Medicine
  • A Lupus Registry and Repository that researchers across the country can utilize to help identify genes that determine susceptibility to the disease
  • A Neonatal Lupus Registry that researchers across the country can utilize to research data and genetic information on neonatal lupus
  • Funding for The Lupus Federal Working Group-to focus on lupus research progress
  • Research studies to better understand:
    • Genetics-genes that are associated with susceptibility to lupus or play a role in the development of lupus
    • Biomarkers-something that can be found in cells or tissues that predicts lupus flares or lupus disease process
    • The lupus disease process-how it affects different organs, how it behaves in its earliest clinical manifestations

If someone has HIV will they catch AIDS?

That answer below is true - but medications for HIV are better than ever before and there are more coming down the pipeline. If a HIV poz person eats healthy, doesn't smoke and exercises regularly, and adheres to their medication then they can live for a very very long time. Not only have I been living with HIV for 4 years now I also know of people who have lived with the virus for 18+ years! The medication is excellent compared to what it once was in the 80's and early 90's. HIV/AIDS is no longer a death sentence. It is now considered more of a chronic condition. But medication must be taken all the time with no doses being missed. Also, it is my personal belief and I'm sure there are many doctors who would agree with me...if you are sexually active at any age and if you engage in unprotected sex or have in the past regardless of being married or not, you should get tested once per year for HIV. 1/3 of people with the virus don't know they have it and unknowingly infect others. This virus does not discriminate, it has no boundaries. I come from a wealthy family and I'm Caucasian. However, there is a community out there for HIV poz people where they can turn to for support. Poz.com or Thebody.com are great resources for people wanted to educate themselves on this disease. Get tested, have no fear because knowledge is power. It means that if you don't have it (AIDS) yet, you will soon (usually 6 months to a year). AIDS is the symptoms ... HIV is the (virus) cause.

Are you born with lupus?

Researchers are still discovering genetic issues in lupus. You may be born with the genetic make up that predisposes you to develop lupus later in life. But lupus may or may not develop. In cases of genetically identical twins, both develop lupus in only about 30% of the cases. A baby born to a mother who has lupus might have neonatal lupus which usually clears on its own in six months or so. In some cases the infant might have congenital heart block, but not necessarily lupus.

What are some of the prescribed medicines for Crohns Disease?

Crack * Aminosalicylates (such as sulfasalazine or mesalamine). These medicines help manage symptoms for many people who have Crohn's disease. * Antibiotics such as ciprofloxacin and metronidazole. These may be tried if aminosalicylates are not helping your symptoms. These medicines work especially well for disease in the colon. Antibiotics are also used to treat fistulas, which are abnormal connections or openings between two organs or parts of the body. But 50% of fistulas come back when antibiotics are stopped.2 * Corticosteroids (such as budesonide or prednisone). These may be given by mouth for a few weeks or months to control inflammation. But corticosteroids have serious side effects, such as high blood pressure, osteoporosis, and increased risk of infection. ** Budesonide causes remission in mild or moderate Crohn's disease of the ileum and the right colon. It does not work as well as prednisone or other corticosteroids. But it also does not have as many side effects as other corticosteroids. The long-term side effects are not well known, so your doctor will probably not have you take it for a long time. ** Prednisone may help if budesonide does not. * Medicines that suppress the immune system (called immunomodulator medicines), such as azathioprine (AZA), 6-mercaptopurine (6-MP), or methotrexate. You may take these if the medicines listed above do not work, if your symptoms come back when you stop taking corticosteroids, or if your symptoms come back often, even with treatment. * Tumor necrosis factor (TNF) antagonists, such as infliximab (Remicade). Your doctor may have you try these medicines if you have not had success with other medicines for Crohn's disease. In some cases, these medicines are tried before some of the other medicines that are listed above. Infliximab is also used to treat fistulas if antibiotics do not heal them. Other TNF antagonists may be used to treat Crohn's disease. They may work for people for whom infliximab has stopped working and for people who have a bad reaction to infliximab.

What causes celiac disease?

The actual "cause" of allergies is one of those mysterious subjects. People can have allergies to all kinds of things and there doesn't seem to be any particular reason other than a common familial tendency toward allergies. Family members don't often share the same allergies, but they share a TENDENCY toward allergies. The mother might be allergic to nuts and the daughter might be allergic to eggs. Allergy to gluten is usually specific to the type of grain, often wheat gluten. You might be able to tolerate other grains, like rye, oat or rice. Often these types of food alergies can subside after several years. Good luck.

Note: People often speak of a "gluten allergy" when they mean either a wheat allergy or celiac disease, which is not an allergy - it is an autoimmune reaction to a family of grains including wheat, barley, rye, spelt, kamut, and triticale.
People who suffer from gluten allergies have to stay away from wheat products to avoid allergiv reactions ranging from asthma lile symptoms to anaphylaxis.
