I have just recently read this book for my English class and I loved it! But, the time period is never revealed and I think that Ayn Rand wanted it that way. I think that's what gives it so much more room to use your own mind. She didn't focus so much on the time period, or the setting. The book itself looks a bit large. But you actually on read the first half since the other half is basiclly a draft of the book. You have to read about 105 pages.

In "Anthem" by Ayn Rand, the homes are all similar in that they are small, simple, and lack personalization or individuality. They reflect the collectivist society in which the characters live, where conformity is valued over personal expression.

A fountainhead is the source from which a stream of water emerges. Howard Roark is this the essence of this concept. His creative, original, and self worthy energy prevail throughout the story. He a creative force, the beginning of all that is good and noble in this world. A Fountainhead is also a stone that is sometimes used for countertops. Roark also, early on in the story, works in a stone quarry. The book's title is a reference to Rand's statement that "man's ego is the fountainhead of human progress".

In short: No. Ayn Rand explictly rejects the Existentialist movement for she thinks Existentialism identified philosophy as feelings and thus anti-reason. What is interesting though, she would have liked to have her 'Objectvisim' named Existentialism if the name wasn't already taken.
