When Ruth started playing in the minors, for Baltimore of the International League in 1914, he made $1,800 a year. His first full year in the majors was 1915 and his salary was $3,500. In 1917, he made $5,000 and in 1918, he made $7,000. His first two years with the Yankees, 1920 and 1921, he made $20,000. In 1922, he signed a five year contract at $52,000 per year. In 1927, he signed a three year contract at $70,000 per year. In 1930, he signed a two year contract at $80,000 per year. In 1932, a one year contract for $75,000 and in 1933, a one year contract for $52,000. In 1934, a one year contract for $30,000. In 1935, his final year, he signed a one year contract for $25,000.

I will give you a couple of players whose MLB careers ended before 1914, which is when the Babe's started.

A position player would be Cap Anson and a pitcher would be Addie Joss.

Anson played 27 seasons (1871-1897) for the Rockford Forest Citys, Philadelphia Athletics, and the teams known then as the White Stockings and Colts which is now the Chicago Cubs. He had a career batting average of .334 (24th best in MLB history), 3435 base hits (6th best in MLB history), and 2075 RBIs (3rd best in MLB history). It was his MLB career RBI record that Babe Ruth broke in 1933. Ty Cobb broke his career MLB base hits record in 1923.

Joss pitched for the Cleveland Naps (now Indians) from 1902-1910. He won 20+ games in a season 4 times, had a career ERA of 1.89 which is 2nd best in MLB history, and threw 45 shutouts in 260 career starts. He pitched a perfect game in 1908 throwing only 74 pitches. Walter Johnson called Joss the best pitcher he had ever seen. Tragically, Joss contracted tubercular meningitis in April, 1911 and shortly thereafter passed away at the age of 31.

Paige was 11 years younger than Ruth, so by the time he was coming up, Ruth was going down. However, they did compete at least once in a barnstorming game. The great Buck O'Neal described it:

I wish I could have been there when Babe Ruth pointed and hit the ball out of the ballpark in the 1932 World Series. I wish I could have seen that. But I did see something I admired just about as much, with Satchel Paige and Babe Ruth. This was in Chicago, after Ruth came out of the major leagues. He was barnstorming, playing with different teams, and he played us. Satchel was pitching and Ruth was hitting. Satchel threw Ruth the ball and Ruth hit the ball, must have been 500 feet, off of Satchel. Satchel looked at Ruth all the way around the bases and when Ruth got to home plate, you know who shook his hand? Satchel Paige shook Ruth's hand at home plate.

They stopped the game and waited, he and Satchel talking, until the kid went out, got the ball, brought it back and Satchel had Babe Ruth autograph that ball for him. That was some kind of moment.

Baseball fans honored him on April 27, 1947, which was declared Babe Ruth Day for every organized baseball league in the United States. His jersey number 3 was retired at his last appearance at Yankee Stadium on June 13, 1948, which also commemorated the stadium's 25th anniversary.
