An overhead hit in badminton is a hit that requires to hold the racquet somewhere above the head level in order to hit. It doesn't matter if it's off to the right or left sides, just if it's hit above your head. A powerful overhead hit is also known as a smash, which the shuttlecock is being smashed down across the net and is driven down towards the ground in the opponent's court. These are usually aimed at kill points, points that are near the boundary lines.

You hit the shuttle up and which every way the shuttle head is facing that person serves first. In mixed (when a girl + boy play together) the girl always has to serve first. The first service is always made from the right hand side of the court.

You will need a a lighter racket, a softer flex and moderate balance. It should be a racket of 4U or above. The stringing could be still BG 66 Ultimate at 27 lbs. A suggestion for that racket would be the Yonex Z Speed or Z Slash.

In USRA-sanctioned tournaments, there is a referee for every match. The referee uses whatever method they want, though in almost every case they will write either a 1 or 2 on a piece of paper and ask one of the players/teams to guess the number. If the player/team gets it right, they choose whether to serve first or not. If they get it wrong, the choice goes to the other player/team.

In the second game (USRA matches are played best-of-3), the player/team which received first in the first game gets first service. If a third game is played, the player/team which scored the most points in the first two games gets first service.
