What is a bat?

Batting cages are places where you go to practice your batting. They have a machine that will pitch the ball for you, and you stand there with a baseball bat and swing at the pitches, to see how many / how well you can hit. A batting cage is normally an enclosed cage where baseball players can practice their batting skills. The batter stands at one end of the cage and a pitching machine is at the other end. Sometimes when there is no pitching machine available a human pitcher will take its place, although this does not happen often. The pitching machine will then pitch baseballs to the batter, who attempts to hit them. The pitching machine can be set to various levels of speed depending on the skill of the batter, or the type of pitch they wish to practice hitting. These speeds normally rage from around 30 to 90 miles per hour. The purpose of the cage is to keep the baseballs within a certain range, so they are not lost and can be retrieved easily. Batting within an enclosed space also means that there is less chance of stay balls hurting others who might be nearby. The batting cages are often found indoors or where space is limited, as they take up little room. In some cases the pitching machine may be completely automatic. In these cases, the flooring of a batting cage is often slightly sloped. This means that the balls roll back to the pitching machine and are automatically fed back into it, ready to be pitched again. These automatic pitching machines normally pitch out synthetic baseballs or softballs, as opposed to official leather-clad balls.

Where can you buy a two piece catchers mask?

you can usually buy a two piece catchers mask seperately. i bought my face mask from dicks sporting goods, but i bought the helmet from a different supplier.

you can do an internet search for "catchers skull caps", and there will be some different sites to provide you the products that you will be looking for.

i perfer a two piece catchers mask because, when your throwing down to 2nd base the mask flies off your head, but when using the hockey style masks: they tend to stay on your head and to block your vison because they spin on your head.

Is the size of a baseball used in Japan the same size as it is in the USA?

Yes. The baseball is almost standard in size the world over. The playing field isn't so standard. I believe the Japanese pitcher's mound is shorter and closer to home plate. Actually the baseball sizes are slightly different in Japan and USA professional baseball. I played baseball there and in the states and was informed that Japanese baseballs are slightly lighter, but almost not noticable.

What is the best infielders baseball glove?

This is much more simple and accurate compared to answer below: On higher levels

- middle infielders (ss & 2nd) they will typcially stay with a size range of 11.25in - 12in depending on players preference.

- 3rd basemen will range between 11.75in - 12.25 with 12in being most common size.

- 1st basemen have mitts, not gloves. The mitts are measured in circumference and not length. They range from 12.5 - 13in

Well it is generally dependent on the size of the hand.

A first basemen will want to wear a tall (long) glove with a large web (glove's pocket, usually weaved) when they play that position.

However a second, third baseman, or shortstop should all wear a smaller glove, allowing them to quickly find the ball in their glove and release it.

The sizes for middle infielders (second baseman and shortstop) will have an average of a size between 9 inches and 12 inches.

A third baseman will have an average of 10 to 13 inches.

A first baseman should have a much larger glove, some going to 20 inches or more.

Answer above is correct and incorrect. Middle Infielders in organized baseball ages 12yrs and older will more than likely use an 11 - 11.75inch gloves. 3rd basemen, 11.5 - 12inch. And 1st basemen usually between 12.5 - 13inch. There are no such thing as 20inch or more gloves!!! Catchers mitts use 32inch and up but are measured in circumference, while gloves and 1st basemen mitts measure in length.

Why does an aluminum bat hit a baseball farther than a wooden bat?

Aluminum bats are lighter than wooden bats, and therefore allow for a faster swing which is known as bat speed. A faster bat speed will drive a ball further allowing one to hit more home runs or even allowing for a higher batting average because the ball is hit harder and faster.

Why are MLB players not allowed to have metal bats?

An aluminum bat is lighter and stronger than wood, children of little league age are often times not strong enough to swing a wooden bat in a length and barrel size to be competitive. It has increased the hitting ability of the younger players and added to a more exciting game.

The above answer is absolutely correct, but I think all aluminum bats everywhere should be banned. There's nothing like "the crack of the bat", with the youth of today are not experiencing.

What is a baseball cork?

Cork Ball, as it was played in the southend of Columbus, Oh. after WWll consisted of simply a fishing cork and a cutoff broomstick handle. The cork was normally wrapped in in any electrical tape we could scrounge from our parents. Our game consisted of 3 strikes and you were out of the inning. We used street curbs on each side of the street plus and other areas between the sidewalks on each side to mark our singels, doubles, etc. The uniqueness of our game the way the cork was pitched. It was gripped between the thumb and the index and middle fingers and released underhanded. Depending on the angle of release, the cork would dive, drop, curve(dramatically) or rise in and out. The batter never knew what was coming. The cork ball pitcher's motion was similar to a fastpitch softball pitcher. In the seventies and eighties I taught my sons the game. Now the grandsons are learning. One thing about this game; You need good eyes! Old timers like me need not apply.
