Is baseball a mental game?

Tennis is the most mental sport. You need to be mentally strong to be able to keep the way you play against players that are consistent or very competitive. Just ask all the tennis players you know and they will say that tennis is absoulutely one of the most mental sports. Every tennis player gets stressed out if they miss their shots or lose a match. Especially, profesional players. Millions of people watching them, of course they have to be mentally strong so they don't get nervous or breakdown in front of everybody. Tennis is 90 % mental and 10 % physical strength.

Can you hit the 8 ball first?

No. In 8 Ball, a player is not allowed to hit an opponent's ball with the cue ball first, however the player may hit his ball first, THEN into an opponent's ball, to sink the 8 ball, so long as the player calls that combination.

How many times is a team up to bat in one inning?

The number of plate appearances a batter can have in a season is totally dependent upon the number of games the team plays in a season, and if a player played the entire game in each of them.

In Major League Baseball, each team plays 162 games. There are a minimum of 27 plate appearances for each team, so each position in the batting order would have a minimum of three plate appearances. (However, if the home team is ahead, they do not bat in the bottom of the 9th inning, so they would have potentially fewer plate appearances in those games, but let's ignore that for this exercise.)

So, if a single, individual player played all nine innings of all 162 games, and came up to bat a minimum of 3 times per game, he would have a minimum of 486 plate appearances at the end of the season.

Plate appearances are not the same thing as at-bats. If the batter reaches bases on a walk or is hit by a pitch, or if he sacrifices, it is a plate appearance, but it doesn't count as an at-bat in the statistics.

According to baseball-reference.com, Hank Aaron averaged 606 plate appearances and 538 at-bats a season over his 23 season career, while Cal Ripken, Jr. averaged 613 plate appearances and 550 at-bats per season over the course of his 21 season career. These guys were both iron men, and probably averaged more plate appearances than current players do, but it's a good comparison.

The umpire calls a ball batted behind homeplate a foul ball. The ball spins back onto homeplate without being touched. Is the ball fair or foul?

If the ball landed behind home plate, it is already a foul ball, even if it rolls back into fair territory.

If the batter already has 2 strikes and then the ball is bunted foul, it's an out.

The above answer is wrong. If a batted ball lands behind home plate but rolls forward and settles on the plate or in front of the plate, it is a fair ball.

If a baseball player hits a line drive and tries for a double and gets tagged out does it count as a hit?

Yes. If you reach base safely from a base hit you are credited with a hit regardless of whether you are thrown out attempting to stretch it.

What is charged if a fielder fail to make a routine play?

It is an error on the fielder who botched the play. If the ball takes a bad hop, I believe it is the official scorekeeper's call on whether it could have been played as a routine or not. Somebody will have to improve this answer if I am wrong about that.

What happens when a fly ball hits the Foul pole?

It is a foul ball and runners return to the base they occupied at the time of the pitch.

If the batter has less than two strikes, it is a strike. If the batter has two strikes, it remains two strikes, unless the batter was bunting, in which case the batter is out.

What is the distance from the pitchers mound to first base?

150 feet I'm sorry but the answer above is incorrect. the full distance between 3rd and 1st is only 127.28 feet. The distance from 1st to the pitchers mound is 63.72 feet. the same goes for 3rd to pitchers mound.

Do walks count as earned runs?

Generally yes...if a pitcher walks a batter and he comes around to score, that is an earned run against the pitcher, unless he scores on an error Bases loaded walks that score a run also count as an earned run against the pitcher that allowed the man on third to reach base, unless he reached base on an error

How far is 2nd base to home plate using 70 foot bases?

This is a match problem which is easily solved with the match formula of a2 + b2 = c2.

65 ft2 + 65 ft2 = 8450 ft2

The square root of 8450 ft2 is 91.92 ft

So, 2nd base is 92.92 ft from the back of home plate on a field with 65 ft bases paths.

How do you measure the height of a baseball pitcher's mound?

When has a foul ball killed someone?

On July 22, 2007 first base coach for the Tulsa Drillers of the Texas League, Mike Coolbaugh, was struck in the neck by a line drive while he was standing in the first base coaches box. The impact destroyed his left vertebral artery which caused a brain hemorrage. He was treated immediately and rushed to a hospital but he passed away less than an hour after being struck. Also c1910 Ty Cobb hit a foul ball into the stands killing somebody.

In MLB does the batter have to run around the bases after hitting a home run?

*So, players have got to dot those t's and cross those i's. Er, uh, you know what I meant. *There are no shortcuts, even for the newly phrased "walk-off" home run or hit that wins a game. If the batter simply "walks off", he negates the result of his at bat. *Yeah, you've got to run the bases no matter what. Yes, all the bases have to be touched. And if you're not an over-payed, lazy or arrogant ball player, you run them at a good pace. = Yes.., = ...if you want the run to count.

Do you have to have a high school diploma to play Major League Baseball?

Yes; but you do not have to go to college; you can get drafted as soon as you're out of high school.

Who was the first major league baseball player to pitch a ball over 100mph?

Right now the guy who's throwing the hardest, and isn't a reliever is Justin Verlander. His rookie season he often hit 100 to 102 MPH in games(was clocked at 102 in his no hitter.) Zumaya also often hit 101-103... he led the leagues in pitches at or over 100 mph that season as reliever. I've seen Harden, Brian Wilson, Kerry Wood, Brad Lidge, Burnett, Papelbon and Beckett all hit it before. Oswalt had a pitch clocked at 100 on a foul tip his rookie season but haven't seen him throw harder than 99 since then.

Most people don't know much about this, and just make up crap. Obviously guys like Nolan, Clemens and Johnson hit 100(Nolan did so more than any pitcher probably.)

But the fastest I've seen a guy throw is Billy Wagner. One game he closed in like 2003, he threw like 13 pitches, 9 were 100 or over. Every other pitch he threw was a mediocre fastball clocked at 99.
