Jackie Robinson played 10 full seasons for the Brooklyn Dodgers, from 1947 to 1956. He won a batting title (1949), and was named the National League's Rookie of the Year (1947) and Most Valuable Player (1949). He appeared in six World Series, all of them against the New York Yankees (1947, 1949, 1952, 1953, 1955 and 1956). The Dodgers won their only world championship in Brooklyn in 1955. After his retirement, Robinson was inducted into the National Baseball Hall of Fame in 1962, his first year of eligibility.

For youth players, it shouldn't really matter how fast a player throws, however if that player has developed control and the ability to change speeds. Yes, 55-65 MPH may be a good bar to set, but keep in mind the pitchers like Greg Maddux, Tom Glavine, and Jamie Moyer. None of these guys even on a good day would top 90mph on a fastball. The three gentlemen mentioned have outstanding control, and great ability to change speeds. Velocity is an overrated thing. Hit your spots, throw strikes, and get outs. That equals wins.

Don't know if it's "officially" the closest, but in the striked shortened 1981 season, the Phillies' Mike Schmidt led the National League with 31 HR, 91 RBI and finished 3rd in the batting race with a .316 average. pitchers may not switch throwing hands in the middle of an at bat. they may switch from hitter to hitter however There is nothing I have found in the MLB rules that states a pitcher cannot switch throwing hands when facing a single batter. Maybe someone can point out the specific rule that states what the above answerer says is factual? There is no rule in the official baseball scores that say a pitcher cannot change his hands. However, just as a batter cannot switch while the pitcher is on the rubber, so too can the pitcher not switch while on the rubber, as that would be an illegal motion while in the set position and be considered a balk (with runners on) or a ball (with bases empty).

Leroy Satchel Paige's life time Major League record was 28 wins, 31 losses and 32 saves with a 3.29 ERA. He played two seasons with the Cleveland Indians (1948 & 1949), three seasons with the St. Louis Browns (1951 to 1953) and, after a retirement of some 11 years, he returned briefly in 1965 with the Kansas City Athletics where his record was 0-0. He was reportedly 58 years old then.

It was Jerry Robinson. He and his wife Mallie had five children, and Jack Roosevelt Robinson was the youngest, born on January 31, 1919 in Cairo, Georgia. The first game of baseball every played was just that, baseball. However, most research seems to point to the English sport of rounders as the basis for modern baseball. The very first recorded baseball game using modern rules took place in 1846 between the New York Knickerbockers and the New York Nine.

That has occurred once in MLB ... Bob Feller of the 1940 Cleveland Indians no hit the Chicago White Sox, winning 1-0, on Opening Day. The game was exciting to be sure and had a few scares for Bob Feller & the Sox. In the 2nd inning 3 walks loaded the bases for the Sox, with 2 outs. Feller struck out the next batter to end the threat. Also, in with two down in the 9th, the Sox mounted a rally but it failed. Feller was the first pitcher to have a no hit day opener since Red Ames in 1909.

All retired baseball players who cannot get these jobs are given the 'Ted Williams' treatment (popularized by Futurama). The 'Ted Williams Treatment' involves having your head removed and placed in cryonic biostasis.

Clearly, this is a scary prospect for players who don't have enough media savvy to work as a broadcaster. Retirement for these types of players translates to certain death... which is why Ricky Henderson still refuses to retire.
