Does catcher have to throw at base that is being stealed on?

No, the catcher (or any other player) can choose not to throw to a base at any time, regardless of whether a runner is going there. If the catcher knows he can't get a stealing runner out, he will most likely not throw to avoid the risk of an error.

Why did the 1967 St. Louis Cardinals only play 161 games?

MLB does not require teams to make up late season games cancelled due to rain if the outcome of the game will not change the standings. The September 25 game, scheduled against the Chicago Cubs, was cancelled due to rain and was the second game of a two game series. The Cardinals were so far ahead of every other team in the League, at that time by 10 games with only four games left in the season, that it was not necessary to make up the game since they had already clinched the pennant.

Can you wear the same cleats for youth football and baseball?

"Football cleats give you more support in the midsole than soccer or baseball cleats," says Joseph Skiba, equipment manager for the New York Giants. "This helps with lateral movement and with things like taking hits or making tackles." With a sturdier feel than a soccer cleat, football cleats keep your feet and ankles from turning. This allows for quick movements and helps keep your feet under you when tackling, blocking or taking hits. So it's probably fine to wear football cleats for baseball or soccer, but you shouldn't wear baseball or soccer cleats for football.

When did Roger Maris hit 61 home runs?

Roger Maris hit 61 home runs during the 1961 season for the New York Yankees.

What is the history behind Major League Baseball?

Baseball evolved from cricket in the early to mid 1800's. Then a man named Abner Doubleday "invented baseball" closer to the mid 1800's.

-----

Baseball was developed from an earlier game called rounders. The earliest reference we have to baseball dates to 1744. One of the earliest references in literature was in Jane Austen's Northanger Abbey, probably written before 1800, in which the heroine is described as liking to play baseball.

At first, the rules were not codified, but would be agreed upon before a game. There is a story that Abner Doubleday invented baseball in 1839, and it is possible he wrote some codification at that time, but historians seem to regard his invention of baseball as a myth. The oldest codification we have was by Alexander Cartwright of the New York Knickerbockers, in 1845.

Baseball associations became very important by 1850 in some areas of the United States, notably New York. Leagues and associations of clubs started to develop in 1857. The game was further spread during the Civil War, as a pastime for the soldiers.

The oldest major league is the National League, which was formed in 1875, and its formation is important because it had formal rules that had been absent earlier. The American League evolved from the earlier Western League about the turn of the 20th century. In 1903, the two leagues formalized relations with each other, and the World Series began to be played

Which current player has played for the most MLB teams?

Mike Morgan, a pitcher whose career spanned 1978-2002, pitched for 12 different teams during his career. Those teams were the Yankees, Athletics, Blue Jays, Mariners, Orioles, Dodgers, Cubs, Cardinals, Reds, Twins, Rangers, and Diamondbacks. Click on the 'Career Stats for Mike Morgan' link for more information.

Ron Villone, a pitcher whose career spans 1995-2009, has tied Morgan's record for appearing with 12 different MLB Teams. In order, Villone has pitched for the Mariners, Padres, Brewers, Indians, Reds, Rockies, Astros, Pirates, Marlins, Yankees, Cardinals, and Nationals.

Deacon McGuire (primarily a Catcher; 1884-1912) also played for 12 teams: Toledo, Cleveland (American Association), Rochester, Washington (American Association), Detroit, Philadelphia, Washington (National League), Brooklyn, Detroit (American League), New York, Boston and Cleveland (American League). McGuire is usually credited with having played with only 11 teams because the Washington Statesmen of the American Association in 1891 became the Washington Senators of the National League in 1892.

Matt Stairs, 1B/OF/DH, has played for 12 different teams during his career. Those teams were, in order, the Montreal Expos, Boston Red Sox, Oakland Athletics, Chicago Cubs, Milwaukee Brewers, Pittsburgh Pirates, Kansas City Royals, Texas Rangers, Detroit Tigers, Toronto Blue Jays, Philadelphia Phillies, and San Diego Padres. Stairs is still active playing for the Padres.

The teams are the yankees, blue jays, cubs, rays, mets, cardinals, marniners, phillies, and reds. Miguel Cairo is still active, and he is playing for the Cincinnati Reds as a utility player.

What happens when a baserunner is hit by a thrown ball?

When a baserunner is hit by a thrown ball, the ball is in play. The one exception is if the baserunner is called out for interfering with the throw. The most common such is when a baserunner runs in fair territory towards first base, and gets hit by a throw. In that case the runner is out, the ball is dead, and all other runners must return to their previous bases. Hall of Fame pitcher Tom Seaver once said that if when a pitcher fields a bunt he sees the runner running in fair territory, he should throw the ball into that player's back, getting the out and preventing anybody from advancing on the attempted sacrifice. A batter running to first should run in foul territory, otherwise he risks getting called out if he's hit by a throw. Another case of interference is if the baserunner is deemed to have intentionally moved into the throw. In a famous case from the 1978 World Series, Yankee great Reggie Jackson was forced out at second and then was hit by the throw to first. The Dodgers argued that Jackson deliberately swung his hip into the ball. Certainly Jackson made no effort to avoid the throw. However interference was not called, so Jackson successfully broke up the double play. Runners going from first to second on ground balls to first often attempt to run into the path the first baseman would use to throw to second. Chase Utley did this successfully in an April 2008 game against the Mets. First baseman Carlos Delgado's throw hit Utley in the back (Delgado was charged with a throwing error), all runners were safe, and the play ultimately led to the Phillies' victory.

What is a pop time in baseball?

I've heard Steve Yeager had the best pop-to-pop time in baseball...An average of 1.65, which is pretty astronomical. That takes a mix of amazingly quick footwork, a real cannon of an arm, and accuracy--to save time on the tag.

Guys like Carlton Fisk and Ivan Rodriguez (both nicknamed "Pudge" by the way), had/have averages of around 1.80 to 1.85 throughout their careers. The major league average is around 2.0 to 2.1, so that gives an idea of how quickly Yeager was able to get in down there.

EDIT:

Incorrect. Sorry, but mlb average is 1.85 to 1.95. Pudge Rodriguez was consistently in the 1.7s, and may of touched in the 1.6s, but I'm pretty sure Steve Yeager never had an average of 1.65. He may of touched 1.65 a few times, but as to the best average pop times, no one beats Ivan Rodriguez and Johnny Bench.
