Do bats poop while sleeping?

All living organisms excrete waste, so yes they do. In fact whilst bat urine is not a problem, bat faeces (bat poo) is. In the UK all bats are a protected species and so if bats are present in a builting (like in the loft of your home) you are nor allowed, by law, to remove them unless this is done by a specialist and the bats properly rehoused. In the meantime their droppings and can become quite a nuisance and health hazard.

Are there bats in Colorado?

Yes. There is a large colony (100,000-250,000) of Mexican free-tailed bats that migrate to Colorado in the summer and live in an abandoned iron mine. This is the largest colony in Colorado. In the winter, they migrate to South America. I have included a link to the brochure about the bats. The outflight that takes place every evening is spectacular and I would recommend it highly. Other than that, I don't have any more specific details about bats in Colorado. I have seen bats during the summer in various places in Colorado, but only a few here & there - nothing like the large colony at the Orient Mine.

Are bats more a predator or a prey?

About seventy percent of bats are insectivores and would be considered primarily predators. Most of the rest are frugivores, or fruit eaters and would only be prey if you had to choose. A few species such as the Fish-eating Bat feed from animals other than insects, with the vampire bats being the only mammalian parasite species. These other bats would also fall into the predator category. Note that while nocturnal birds of prey and snakes will eat bats if given the opportunity, when it comes to natural predators, bats really aren't threatened by them to an extreme. The fact that bats are very fast in flight and they are also going to live in some out of the way locations means that they are often overlooked by predators. Mostly they die from disease, injury, old age, and human activities.

The biggest predator of bats are humans. Most people are afraid of bats and view them as a type of rodent. They don't like they idea of these creatures living in their trees, attic, or other locations. The fact that a bat colony can very rapidly grow is another reason for concern. They like safely in numbers but that isn't something that people want to have around them.

The risk of some type of disease being spread from bats also worry people. They hear about rabies and other health problems that are possible. They also worry about the effects from bat urine and feces that have been left behind. Traps are often set to dispose of bats.

Bats often live in caves and that is a common form of exploration for humans. By clearing out the bats they can use that for a recreational area or other type of fun setting. Many researchers though feel that no matter where bats try to live there are going to be humans that have the ability to get rid of large numbers of them.

How are micro bats and mega bats alike?

Despite the name, not all mega bats (megachiroptera) are larger than micro bats (microchiroptera). The major distinction between the two suborders is based on other factors.

Mega bats eat fruit, pollen, or nectar. They have a well-developed visual cortex and shows good visual acuity. Also, the sense of smell is excellant in these creatures. In contrast to micro bats, mega bats do not, as a rule, use echolocation (with one exception, the Egyptian fruit bat, which uses high pitched clicks to navigate in caves).

Micro bats use echolocation, whereas mega bats do not (except for Rousettus and relatives). Micro bats lack the claw at the second toe of the forelimb. The ears of micro bats do not form a closed ring, but the edges are separated from each other at the base of the ear. Micro bats lack under fur; the only have guard hairs or are naked. Micro bats eat insects, blood, small mammals, and fish.
