In Beowulf, the brave characters display courage, selflessness, and loyalty in the face of danger, such as Beowulf himself and his loyal warriors. In contrast, characters that are not brave may exhibit fear, selfishness, or betrayal, such as Unferth who doubts Beowulf's abilities or the cowardly retainers who flee during the dragon's attack. Beowulf's kinsman urged him to go because they needed his strength, courage, and skill to defeat the monster Grendel, who was causing havoc in their land. Beowulf was known for his prowess in battle and his willingness to protect others, making him the best candidate to face the threat.

Grendel is associated with darkness and evil in the poem Beowulf, so he strikes during the cover of night when it's easiest to cause chaos and fear. Nighttime also symbolizes vulnerability, making his attacks more terrifying and unexpected. Additionally, feasting and celebrations typically take place in Mead Hall during the evenings, presenting Grendel with ample opportunities to wreak havoc on the warriors gathered there.

Beowulfs quote- I swam in the blackness of night, hunting monsters out of the ocean and killing them one by one; death was my errand and the fate they have earned. Its revealed later in the story that while beowulf was being consumed by a monster, a lone soldier defended him. Thus demonstrating loyalty and bravery. The lone soldier was to be king after beowulf died from the encounter.

On page 46, Grendel is described as a monstrous figure, descending from Cain who was cursed by God and living in a gruesome marsh. He is said to be troubling the Hrothgar's mead-hall, killing and devouring many of his warriors. Grendel is depicted as a menacing and terrifying creature that instills fear in the people of Herot.

Beowulf offers to kill Grendel to prove his bravery and skill as a warrior. He sees it as an opportunity to gain fame and glory by defeating a notorious monster that has been terrorizing the Danes. Additionally, Beowulf believes it is his duty as a warrior to help those in need and protect the innocent.

Grendel's mother was devastated and sought revenge for her son's death by attacking Heorot hall and killing one of Hrothgar's warriors.

The poet may have used religious language to emphasize the spiritual battle between good and evil that exists in the poem. By describing Hrothgar as favored by God and Grendel as a descendant of Cain, it highlights the moral and ethical dimensions of the characters' actions and reinforces the theme of divine intervention in the story.

Beowulf offers his reputation as a skilled and experienced warrior, showcasing his previous successes in battles as proof that he is the right hero for the job of defeating Grendel. He also explains his intent to fight the monster without weapons, relying solely on his strength and courage to complete the task.
