Where is Bette Davis house in Maine?
Was just in Cape Elizabeth and a sign at Fort Williams Park said that it was on Zebo (sp?) Beach and it was called Whitchery (I know I have that wrong) and that she was there from 1953-1960. I cannot find a Zebo beach on line, so who knows if the sign is correct. If you get anymore info I would like to know.
Bette Davis's home (which she shared with Gary Merrill for a time) was on what is now Zeb's Cove Rd., but her former house has since been torn down to make room for a giant house instead.
The house was a "typical" New Englander version of a Colonial. After Bette, Gary, Margot, B.D. and Phillip moved in, the Merrill's threw some parties that are still talked about.
THE NAME OF THE HOUSE: During these party years, people would get to the fork in the road (one had to drive quite some distance down a dark, dirt road, only to be met by this "fork". Imagine David Niven, drunk as a skunk, trying to turn his Rolls Royce around in a muddy apple orchard field. Guests would shortly arrive at the gas station and ask directions. Once the party guests would be assembled, someone would always ask Bette how she had chosen the name of the place; Davis would give a knowing wink to the guests and say, "Well, my dear, when you asked the station man which way to Bette Merrill's, how did you ask?"
The guest would say, "I just asked which way, thats all."
Bette would then point at a handpainted sign on the side of the house; it spelled out:
"WITCH Way"

Ruth Elizabeth (Bette) Davis was born April 5, 1908 in Lowell, Massachusetts to Harlow Morrell and Ruth Augusta (Favor) Davis. After Miss Davis' father, a patent attorney, abandoned the family about 1915, Bette's mother, Ruthie, relocated the family from Lowell to Newton, Massachusetts, sent her daughters Bette and Barbara ("Bobby") to a boarding school in the Berkshires, in 1921 relocated again to New York City, where she worked very hard as a portrait photographer, to afford the tuition to send Bette to the private & prestigious Cushing Academy in Ashburnham, Massachusetts.
Bette may also have attended some other schools, private and public, including Newton High School in Newton, Massachusetts, in the years before and between the boarding schools and Cushing, from where she would probably have graduated in 1926.
For her acting training, Davis attended the Robert Milton-John Murray Anderson School of the Theatre & Dancein Manhattan beyween 1927-28, the same school later attended by Lucille Ball. Why did Joan Crawford and Bette Davis hate each other?
It is not clear that Joan and Bette 'hated' each other. Joan and Bette made only one picture together - Whatever Happened to Baby Jane. The actresses were similar in that they were both stars, Oscar winners, and strong personalities. Joan was the more glamorous of the two. Bette was more of a classical actress with stage training. Joan started as a hoofer. They may have had personality differences.
In 1935, Joan married Franchot Tone. Bette had co-starred with Franchot Tone in the film Dangerous and was reportedly smitten with him. In 1939, Franchot and Joan divorced. Some theories report that Bette was not happy with the nuptials of Joan and Franchot and was a bit jealous.

In retaliation, Joan supposedly wore a lead apron underneath her costume for the filming of the scene where Baby Jane has to hurry Blanche to the car after offing Elvira the Maid. This caused Bette to sprain her back. They were slated to do another film together Hush Hush Sweet Charlotte. Joan backed out the project reportedly for having pneumonia.
For the Oscars in 1962, Bette was nominated for Baby Jane in the Best Actress category. Joan was not nominated. Joan began a campaign to ask the other nominees to accept the award at the ceremony on the nominee's behalf if she could not attend the ceremony. Anne Bancroft won the Oscar and Joan accepted for Anne who was not able to go. This did annoy Bette.
