you are advised to replace the mirena coil after 5 years, though they probably are effective a while longer than that. Leaving it in much longer, will reduce it's effectiveness. If it's left inside way too long, it can get stuck and be harder to remove. If left very long, it can cause blood loss and pain. Last year we removed a coil that had been in place 20 years. This patient complained about brown loss and pain. It is best to replace your coil after about 5 years to avoid problems with removal later, and guarantee it's optimal effectiveness.

i recently had a copper coil fitted and it took me a week to stop bleeding. however, i read that it should be 2-4 days. some women never stop bleeding until they have the IUD removed. it is hard to say how much but if it very heavy and is heavier than your normal periods, i recommend seeing the doctor. hope this helped!

I got my IUD on July 8 2010 I had my first day of my normal period upon insertion. Bleed for 5 days. Then had continuous spoting until July 21 were I got my period again. I was told that irregular bleeding is normal. However, I will be calling my dr in the am to make sure that this its right

The advantages would be you can't get pregnant, the bleeding during your period will be far less, and if you have irregular periods, the birth control pill will take care of that.

Some diasadvantages would be that if you are taking an oral contraceptive that you have to take it every day, don't skip any and there might be side effects such as headaches, nausea, mood swings...(but if you're using the right one for you, there shouldn't be any side effects)
