A Blu-Ray is a spinning disc optical media used for the storage of lage amounts of data in a portable, typically read only format.

CD's, DVD's, Laser disc's, VCD's and HD-DVD's all use(d) a red laser to read information stored on a spinning disc.

Blu-Ray discs use a blue laser to read information stored on the discs. The frequency of a blue laser is much higher, allowing for the stored bits of data to be physically smaller, allowing form more information to be stored on a single disc. A single layer Blu-Ray disc stores about 25 GigaBytes of information. A double layer stores about twice that.

You need a Blu-Ray reader orplayer in order to read or play a Blu-Ray disc. The technology is patented by the Sony Corporation, and is present in the Playstation 3 console.

Bluray is a digital storage format and the signal chain from disc to television remains digital. The data follows a signal path that will normally deliver an identical signal to the television regardless of the brand or model of player.

Players are different in that they support different features and have different user interfaces. These don't have any affect on the output image quality.

While DVD-R DL discs are more expensive that DVD-R, they are much cheaper than they used to be. Just like all media, the longer they are produced, the cheaper they get. Blu-Ray discs are "as low as $11.99 each" on allmediaoutlet.com in early 2008. I'd be interesting to see how much they are in a year.

Ultraviolet is actually a downloading/streaming system kind of like iCloud from iTunes. It allows you to stream and download content on practically any device that allows it. The code is actually a free download, same with an iTunes digital copy code. But ALL of these codes have an expiration date and after that, you'll have to actually pay for it

To choose a 3D television based on the type of glasses is not a wise decision. Spend time to study both active and passive images. Experience a range of models and get a feel for the difference in the glasses. Make your choice based on which image is the best, which glasses are most comfortable and which 3D image looks the most realistic.

Remember that active glasses are now as light as passive glasses so there is rarely an issue with heavy glasses now.

3d is 3d. its just 2 images one for left and one for right. RealD is one system for taking the 2 images and polarising them to block the opposite eye. Most home theatre systems have been using XpandD aka flicker or shutter, which uses a synchronised LCD shutter in the glasses to block opposite eye. JVC developed a polarising system for the home that uses alternating rows of polarising filters in the TV screen itself. this system allows you to use RealD glasses at home. however it also reduces the image quality in half, making your 1080 into 540 or standard def.

You actually have to download the updates from your player's manufacturer's website and burn the data onto a disc and then put it into your player. But players that are Wi-Fi enabled can receive and download their own updates

If you have a DVD player and just the speakers, no. You will need a system with an amplifier. Some of the Onida systems include this. Connect the digital audio output of the DVD player to the amplifier.
