Why wont your ps3 play blue rays?
PlayStation 3 will Play Blu Ray discs, it will also upgrade the DVDs to 1080p and play the DVDs with much better quality than a player that does not have the upgrade capability. I no longer use my DVD player to play any of the DVDs and only use the PlayStation 3 to play everything. I use my computer to record some shows while I am watching other shows. I then transfer them to DVD and also play them through the PS3. When I am watching the shows I am very impressed with how fast the PS3 can skip over the commercials in the fast forward at speeds of 1.5, 10, 30, and 120. It also has sound at the 1.5 speed and I have found than option useful. Because I have a Sony BR6 TV I don't even have to use a controller for a remote to play the DVDs, or purchase the special PS3 remote because my TV remote will work on the PS3 from the HDMI sync on the TV. I just insert a disc into the PS3 and the TV and Remote switch over to the PlayStation 3. I should mention that even though the PS3 will upgrade the DVDs the picture quality of the Blu Ray is even better than anything I have seen on my TV including all the HD broadcast of Movies and TV shows that are only at 720P.

In order to connect a PS3 to a HDTV you need either component cables or and HDMI cable. You have to make sure your TV has either one of these connections. HDMI looks nothing like component or composite cables. Of course you also need an HDTV.

Do you need a 1080p tv to watch Blu-ray discs?
There are several HD television formats, all agreed with the international standards organisations. The main formats are 720p 1080i and 1080p. Virtually all HD televisions will handle all formats although some of the earliest HD televisions don't operate with 1080p signals. Later televisions are capable of displaying 1080p as well as other formats.
Every HD television has a native resolution. Often, the screen is made up with 1920 x 1080 pixels. All incoming signals are resized to the native resolution. A 720 line signal will be processed to be displayed on the 1080 lines of the display. Similarly, a 1080 line image will be resized to display on 720 or 768 lines if that is the television's native resolution.
Therefore, an LCD television with a native screen resolution of 720 lines will be capable of displaying a 1080 line image.

Yes

It is very likely that an existing theater sound system will work with any new Bluray player without an issue. However, there is a huge range of equipment and an even larger number of combinations of player and sound system, so it cannot be guaranteed. There are likely to be a few combinations that will prove problematic.
An older sound system may be designed to handle 5.1 speaker configurations or even 3.1 configurations. It is likely that the new payer will be delivering 7.1 sound. In almost all cases, a 5.1 or 3.1 sound system will work although without the benefit of the additional channels.

The answer is of course, YES. Blu-ray burners, on standard, are backward compatible to DVD and CD formats, unless some manufacturer purposely made them not able to, which I don't see the point why. The only difference between various Blu-ray burners, is the speed that they can write to these formats.
I have a DIGISTOR external Blu-Ray burner on my system, and it writes to all formats, albeit on different speeds. all the speeds are pretty fast on my drive though. Hope that helps.

A Blu-Ray is a spinning disc optical media used for the storage of lage amounts of data in a portable, typically read only format.
CD's, DVD's, Laser disc's, VCD's and HD-DVD's all use(d) a red laser to read information stored on a spinning disc.
Blu-Ray discs use a blue laser to read information stored on the discs. Bluray is a digital storage format and the signal chain from disc to television remains digital. The data follows a signal path that will normally deliver an identical signal to the television regardless of the brand or model of player.
Players are different in that they support different features and have different user interfaces. These don't have any affect on the output image quality.
