From my knowledge the world's largest DVD collection available is either "blockbusters" or "HMV".....Block busters deals more with games, but does do music, films etc.

As to why your computer cannot read blu-ray discs, it is because it doesn't have a blu-ray reader installed. The same reason your old CD-ROM drive couldn't read DVD's. Just because it fits, doesn't mean it has the capability to play it.

You can play Blu-Ray Movies only on a Blue Ray Player and the PS3 is also a Blue-ray player along with a game console. All Blue-ray Players will also play DVDs and CDs and many like the PS3 will upscale them to near 1080P quality if set up to play Blue ray discs in 1080P. My PS3 plays DVDs so much better that I have not used my DVD player since I saw the first DVD play on the PS3.

PlayStation 3 will Play Blu Ray discs, it will also upgrade the DVDs to 1080p and play the DVDs with much better quality than a player that does not have the upgrade capability. I no longer use my DVD player to play any of the DVDs and only use the PlayStation 3 to play everything. I use my computer to record some shows while I am watching other shows. I then transfer them to DVD and also play them through the PS3. When I am watching the shows I am very impressed with how fast the PS3 can skip over the commercials in the fast forward at speeds of 1.5, 10, 30, and 120. It also has sound at the 1.5 speed and I have found than option useful. Because I have a Sony BR6 TV I don't even have to use a controller for a remote to play the DVDs, or purchase the special PS3 remote because my TV remote will work on the PS3 from the HDMI sync on the TV. I just insert a disc into the PS3 and the TV and Remote switch over to the PlayStation 3. I should mention that even though the PS3 will upgrade the DVDs the picture quality of the Blu Ray is even better than anything I have seen on my TV including all the HD broadcast of Movies and TV shows that are only at 720P.

I am not sure about the Region 8, but it CAN play Blueray and DvD's, this is why most people buy them, it is basically like a 1,000 dollar DVD player for around 400

No. PS3 will, however, and right now buying a PS3 is cheaper than buying an actual Blue-Ray player. So yeah I'd definitely recommend buying the PS3 if you are wanting to delve into Blue-Ray.

The answer is of course, YES. Blu-ray burners, on standard, are backward compatible to DVD and CD formats, unless some manufacturer purposely made them not able to, which I don't see the point why. The only difference between various Blu-ray burners, is the speed that they can write to these formats.

I have a DIGISTOR external Blu-Ray burner on my system, and it writes to all formats, albeit on different speeds. all the speeds are pretty fast on my drive though. Hope that helps.
