Boise Idaho was formed in 1863 when a group of pioneers arrived in the area in search of gold. The pioneers led by Captain Thomas E. Davis named the city after the nearby Boise River. The river was named after French-Canadian fur trappers who had explored the area in the early 1800s and the name Boise is derived from the French word "boise meaning wooded."
The formation of Boise was a result of a combination of geological economic and political factors. Geologically the Boise Valley provided an excellent location for a settlement due to its mild climate abundant water supply and fertile soil. Economically the Boise River and its tributaries were a vital source of transportation and trade. Politically the area was an important crossroads for settlers traveling between Oregon California Utah and Montana.
The city of Boise was officially established on December 24 1863 and the first settlers quickly began to build homes and businesses. Within a year the city had grown to include two churches five stores two hotels and a number of saloons. As the population grew the city\'s infrastructure and economy soon followed and by the turn of the century Boise had become the largest city in Idaho.

"Bois" means "wood" in French. South Idaho was mostly desert except for this one river with cottonwood trees growing on its banks, and French explorers named the river the Wooded River. "Boisee" is French for wooded, so when a town sprang up along its banks it was named Wooded, or Boisee...which eventually lost its second E.

The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints (the "Mormon" church) does not publish membership statistics for any area smaller than a state. However, I do know that the Salt Lake City metro area has many more Mormons (both in actual numbers and percentage) than the Boise metro area. I would assume, with Salt Lake City proper having a higher population and being the headquarters of the Church, that it has more Mormons than Boise.
