User Avatar

Asked by Wiki User

Credit for the construction of the Sydney Harbour Bridge largely belongs to engineer Dr JCC Bradfield (who also oversaw the construction of Brisbane's Story Bridge), while the firm that built the bridge was Dorman Long and Co Ltd, Middlesbrough, Teesside. Sir Ralph Freeman, of Freeman Fox & Partners, was the designer of the Sydney Harbour Bridge. Another civil engineer involved in the Sydney Harbour Bridge project was JF Pain, who was awarded the Manby Premium for a paper on the Sydney Harbour Bridge. He led a group of about forty engineers working for Freeman on Sydney Harbour bridge.

Why is Brooklyn bridge important?

User Avatar

Asked by Wiki User

Before the Brooklyn Bridge was built, there was no way to cross the East River from Brooklyn to Manhattan, or Manhattan to Brooklyn, except by boat. Traveling between them was extremely inconvenient.

The Brooklyn Bridge changed all that. It made commuting much easier; it was now possible for people to live in Brooklyn, but work in Manhattan. It is not a coincidence that the five boroughs -- which at the time were separate cities -- incorporated into one city in 1898, only 5 years after the bridge opened. The Brooklyn Bridge helped bind the boroughs together into one city.

How do you get to 26 Federal plaza from Brooklyn bridge?

User Avatar

Asked by Wiki User

The address 26 Federal Plaza is at the southeast corner of Worth Street and Broadway.

The fastest way would be to take the Downtown A train (of the A-C-E, the blue line) from 34th Street-Penn Station (at 34th Street and 8th Avenue) to Chambers Street.

Depending on which exit you use, you may exit at the corner of Church and Chambers Streets, or the corner of Church and Warren Streets (the next block down from Chambers). Walk 4 or 5 blocks north on Church Street (in the same direction as traffic) to Worth Street, then turn right onto Worth, and walk 1 block east to Broadway.

How much will a taxi cost from penn station to Brooklyn bridge?

User Avatar

Asked by Wiki User

A lot. The base fare would probably be $50 to $70. With tolls, tip and tax, it would be $65 to $85. I once had to take a yellow cab from the Upper West Side to south Westchester, just a few miles north of the border between the Bronx and Westchester. The base fare was about $110, and that was back in 2003 or 2004, before the recent fare increases.

It's much cheaper and just as convenient to take the subway. See the Related Question below.

How do you get from Jamaica Long Island Railroad to the Brooklyn Bridge?

User Avatar

Asked by Wiki User

Connection is available between the LIRR's Jamaica station and the Sutphin Boulevard-Archer Avenue station on the New York City subway system.

Transfer to the subway system (you can buy a plastic Metrocard or a paper Single Ride Ticket at one of the electronic kiosks), and board the Manhattan-bound J-Z (the brown line). You will be boarding the J train, unless you're traveling between 7 and 8:15 AM. The Z train is a one-way rush hour express train; it runs to Manhattan from 7 to 8:15 AM and from Manhattan (to Queens and Brooklyn) from 4:55 to 5:45 PM.

Take the J-Z from Sutphin Boulevard-Archer Avenue to Chambers Street. This station is really a block north of Chambers Street, on Centre Street at Reade Street. But it's connected to the Brooklyn Bridge-City Hall station on the 4-5-6 (the dark green line), which is at the corner of Centre and Chambers Streets. So depending on which exit you use, you'll exit the subway at Chambers Street or Reade Street.

The Chambers Street/Brooklyn Bridge-City Hall station is 1 to 2 blocks up from the entrance to the Brooklyn Bridge. Walk 1 or 2 blocks down Centre Street (along the east side of City Hall Park). The entrance to the footpath (the Brooklyn Bridge Promenade) as well as the auto entrance, will be 1 block down from Chambers Street, across the street (across from City Hall Park).

What countries are connected by Brooklyn Bridge?

User Avatar

Asked by Wiki User

No countRies are connected by the Brooklyn Bridge.

Besides, you do NOT really use the word COUNTY in New York City. You use Boroughs, which have different names,

Borough of Bronx = Bronx County AKA The Bronx

Borough of Brooklyn = Kings County

Borough of Manhattan = New York County

Borough of Queens = Queens County [This is the only area in NYC where the County & Borough share the same name]

Borough of Staten Island = Richmond County.

The Brooklyn Bridge connects New York County [Manhattan] with Kings County [Brooklyn].

NYC = The City of New York, AKA New York City = 5 of 62 counties in New York State.

What is the distance from Third Avenue and 18th Street to the Brooklyn Bridge?

User Avatar

Asked by Wiki User

It's about 2.5 miles. That's the distance from 18th and 3rd to 18th and 2nd (since 3rd Avenue goes Uptown and 2nd goes Downtown, you'll have to go to 2nd to go Downtown), down 2nd Avenue to 1st Street, one block west to the Bowery, down the Bowery to the Park Row/Avenue of the Finest loop that takes you onto the bridge.

Does the Brooklyn Bridge cross the Hudson River?

User Avatar

Asked by Wiki User

No, it doesn't. The Brooklyn Bridge crosses the East River and connects the borough of Brooklyn to the borough of Manhattan.

Note that the East River is not a true river, but a tidal strait. It connects to the ocean on both sides. It flows south from the bay known as the Long Island Sound, down the east side of Manhattan and the west side of Queens and Brooklyn, and into the Atlantic Ocean at New York Harbor.

Why doesn't the wood on the Brooklyn Bridge rot or break?

User Avatar

Asked by Wiki User

While the construction materials of the Brooklyn Bridge include concrete,

mortar, stone, and steel, there would be no Brooklyn Bridge at all were

it not for its most crucial construction component: wood.

Southern Yellow Pine (from Georgia and Florida) forms the essential structural component of the underwater foundations of the bridge. Without those solid wood, pneumatic casings, the Brooklyn Bridge could never have been built, and those

solid yellow pine underwater caissons remain in nearly pristine today.

By the way, it is also underwater wood that holds up most of Venice.

"Wood decay is caused by aerobic insects and bacteria, ones that need air to stay alive. When wood is submerged where there is no air, it remains in good condition indefinitely. Cities like Venice in Italy are supported on wood pilings that are, in some cases, 1000 years old."
