Swamp water buffalo are used primarily as beasts of burden and as meat.

What are the similarities of cow and carabao?

Carabaos are draft animals; horses are riding animals. Of course, both can be used vice versa, e.g. horses may draw, or pull wheeled vehicles, or carry pack saddles, panniers (baskets), etc. It's all a matter of terrain/topography/local usage. Carabaos, though much slower than horses, can carry a lot more or pull a lot more. They are also more suited for warm, humid tropical climates. Astride a horse, I feel more imperious. There is something about a man on horseback which reminds us of adventure, conquest, romance.

For those of you who do not know what a carabao is, it is domestic buffalo, very similar to that of the domestic cow.

How can you determine the age of your Water Buffalo skull?

This can depend on many factors. I can say that a jaw bone that is as shorter than an adults fore arm is a young buffalo. If it is the size of the forearm then it would be an average/mature adult buffalo. If it is much greater in length of a forearm than it may very well be an aged buffalo of great size.

One can also guess an age of a Buffalo by looking at it's horns. If they are short and are starting to point up they can be a few years old, if the horns are large with a slight curl they may be an adult/mature Buffalo, but if they have large horns with a prominent strong curl pointing to their back this can be a very aged matured buffalo.

If this does not help you or seems inaccurate please email the national bison association for more information.

Answer 2:

Age of a skull you find may be defined by how white it is. Skulls from a recently killed bison may still have some dried meat and cartilage attached to it. Inside the brain cavity you may see pupae shells of maggots that hatched into flies if the skull is at least 3 or 4 weeks old, if not much older.

As for telling the age of the bison that was killed, if you have access to the jaw bone of a killed bison, the best way to tell the age is by looking at the teeth.
