remove knee panel under steering column. remove cover above pedals. It is a black 2-3 inch box generic looking and it is mounted on a metal tab. just wiggle and it should release. this is a common cause for failure in radio, fuel door button, and truck button on dash.
It is not an easy task, it may take you few good hours (it s aprox.4h job for a qualified technician)
First start with the Qs:
"Do i need to change something else if I have a leak at the water pump?
YES- coolant fluid on timing belt = It MUST be change too
"When was last time the timing belt changed?"
If the answer it is over 50,000 miles do a cumulative job at a Cadillac or Saturn dealer. It will run approximately $800 + parts (100 water pump+25 timing belt+25 driving belt)
comparative costs:
- timing belt approximated 750 + parts (25 timing belt+25 driving belt)
- water pump approximated 500 + parts (100 water pump+25 driving belt)
If you have good mechanical skills and up to do work on your Catera invest in a SERVICE MANUAL. Try to find and buy the one in 3 volumes for your 2001 (I got mine 1998 for $180- good even only for this job as a hobby over a weekend + you can resell it easy).
My 2000 Catera does the same and that is why I am here today searching for answers..............my suspicion is the immobilizer may be shutting off the fuel and igntion and that module I have yet to find................on another discussion it was said to be in the steering columbe under the lock barrell
because it was designed that way...
most engines idle below 1000.
The oil filter is found under the car, where the steering linkage goes from the wheels up into the frame. It is located about halfway into the "steering linkage tunnel" on the passenger side.
Here is a more technical explanation:

There is no dipstick, it's a sealed transmission, nearly impossible to check yourself. The procedure involves removing a bolt in the transmission housing with the car running in park and dipping your pinky in the hole to see if there is fluid. Take it to transmission shop to be sure, much safer and easier, and most quick lube places won't touch it.
check the fuse box or it could mean the alternator is broken i checked the fuses and alternator they are both fine
Could be that your motor has a rev limiter. Does it only do it in park or neutral? My grand prix has a rev limiter of 3000 rpms. It seems like the motor starts stuttering like you are hitting the gas an letting of repeatedly. This should only happen in park or neutral though. Could be worth taking a look at though.
If the coil is behind the intake, it is easiest to remove wiper arms and cowl below windshield. At least you will be able to see the ignition coil. After that have fun.
No where! It doesn't have one. The transmission is a sealed unit. Tha vehicle needs to be raised and level. There is a plug on the right side of the pan that needs to removed, the oil level is chaecked and refilled at that point.
Due to the way GM decided to do the control of the heaters in the seats. It's what's called bang-bang control. The control system turns on the seat heaters and when the desired temp is reached, turns it off. This is very hard on the heaters. Bet you'll find the seat side of the heater open. Best solution, I believe, is to replace with an aftermarket seat heater.
Trouble code P0100 means:Mass or volume air flow circuit malfunction
The water pump for a 1998 Cadillac catera should be on the front of the engine. It is located near the center.
On exhaust, in front of each cat. convertor
it might be your fuse. Does your seat warmer work?
It all depends on the State that you are in. For example, in Florida you can have a restricted license at 15 and get the original one at 16. In New Jersey you have to be 18 years old.
