How did the Wise Men know that Jesus was special?

Matthew's gospel talks about seeing a star in the East:

Matthew 2:2 Saying, Where is he that is born King of the Jews? for we have seen his star in the east, and are come to worship him.

Most people seem to interpret this as predicting his birth using astrology.

There's an interesting story from Kashmir; Buddhist history talks about Yuz Asaf, a Buddhist leader who was born in Judea in the first century. Buddhists believe that their leader is a re-incarnation of an earlier leader. They discover the leader by reading astrological charts and prayer. The Kashmir Buddhists predicted the leader would be born in Judea and went to find him, so at some point in the first century, some Wise Men from the East arrived in Judea to tell a family that their recently born son (Yuz Asaf) was to be a religious leader. The story goes on that Yuz Asaf came to Kashmir as a young man (around 12 years old) for training then returned to Judea at the age of 30. Yuz Asaf came back to Kashmir a few years later with injured feet and hands, his grave is in Kashmir and, intrigingly, there is a carving of feet on the grave that show the marks of crucification.

2 The Bible says that exactly three wise men traveled from afar on camels to visit the infant Jesus as he lay in the mangeris this true?

No particular number of wise men are mentioned. People have just assumed it from the three types of gift mentioned. Neither does it say they came to see him in the manger, but he was possibly a toddler by the time they arrived. Also their mode of transport is not mentioned. The other ideas commonly associated with the wise men are traditions that have grown up around them. Here's the Biblical account of the events:

== "1Now when Jesus was born in Bethlehem of Judaea in the days of Herod the king, behold, there came wise men from the east to Jerusalem, 2Saying, Where is he that is born King of the Jews? for we have seen his star in the east, and are come to worship him... 8 And he [Herod] sent them to Bethlehem, and said, Go and search diligently for the young child; and when ye have found him, bring me word again, that I may come and worship him also. 9When they had heard the king, they departed; and, lo, the star, which they saw in the east, went before them, till it came and stood over where the young child was. 10When they saw the star, they rejoiced with exceeding great joy. 11And when they were come into the house, they saw the young child with Mary his mother, and fell down, and worshipped him: and when they had opened their treasures, they presented unto him gifts; gold, and frankincense and myrrh. 12And being warned of God in a dream that they should not return to Herod, they departed into their own country another way."

How can camels stand the heat?

Camels are able to withstand changes in body temperature and water content that would kill most other animals. Their temperature ranges from 34°C (93°F) at night up to 41°C (106°F) at day; only above this threshold will they start to sweat. This allows them to preserve about five litres of water a day. However, they can withstand at least 25% weight loss due to sweating.

The thick coat reflects sunlight. A shaved camel has to sweat 50% more to avoid overheating. It also insulates them from the intense heat that radiates from hot desert sand. Their long legs also help with this by keeping them further away from the sand.

Their mouth is very sturdy, to be able to eat thorny desert plants. Long eyelashes and ear hairs, together with sealable nostrils prevent sand from entering. Their pace (always moving both legs of one side at the same time) and their widened feet help them move without sinking in.

All member species of the Camelids are known to have a highly unusual immune system, where part of the antibody repertoire is composed of immunoglobulins without light chain. Whether and how this contributes to their resistance to harsh environments is currently unknown.

Do camels have good ears?

The ear flaps help to direct sound into the inner ear; elephants have very good hearing. The ear flaps have many blood vessels that help to cool the elephant when flapped in the air. Also, a distressed or charging elephant will thrust out their ear-flaps to make them appear more threatening, and signalling their anger/distress.
