Care of Birds

Cage birds have been valued for thousands of years. In the past three or four centuries, birds have been bred extensively in captivity. Keeping a pet bird is very different than keeping a pet mammal. They are not just a feathered kitten or puppy. Avian companions require special care and this is the category to find out all about that.

How do you know your parakeet's age?

Oh! I asked this question myself when i got my parakeet! You can very easily tell how old your parakeet is, just by looking at the lines on it's head. You must estimate though. There is no exact way of knowing how old your parakeet is unless you watch it hatch. If the black lines on a parakeet's head are very very close to it's beak, it is a very young bird. As the bird gets older, the lines on its head by its beak seem to disappear. if there are lines on the back of a parakeets head, expect it to die soon. Parakeets don't live that long.

Are female parakeets friendly?

It depends on how they have been raised. Male or female can be just as friendly. It take a little while for them to trust someone. They all have different personalities and some are going to be friendlier than others.

How do you clip parakeet wings?

You clip a parakeets wings the way you do any other birds. You hold tall of the wing feathers in one hand then you have to look for the 6 non-nerve feathers there is only 6 on each wing but to be safe I would suggest that you bring your parakeet to the vet they will do it for most likely around $30.00 which is not to bad compard to if you cut the wrong wing and had to go to the vet for an emergency.

NO NO NO!!! Take it to a little place I take my bird called, The Bird Shop. Look for it in the phone book. They will clip small bird's wings for only $3.00 and clip their nails for only $2.00. MUCH BETTER THAN DOING IT YOURSELF!!!

Can a female parakeet talk?

Parakeets can talk. They can even learn up to 1,700 words!

It also depends on what you mean by "parakeet". Believe it or not, "parakeet" is not actually a species of bird at all. The term "parakeet" is a generalised term to cover numerous species of smaller, long-tailed parrots. The word tends to be used in countries outside of the birds' native lands. For example, the term "parakeet" is never used in Australia to refer to budgies, lorikeets, rosellas or cockatiels, yet these birds are commonly known as "parakeets" overseas.

Cockatiels are the best talkers and imitators of sounds in general from this group, followed by budgies. Lorikeets and rosellas are less inclined to mimic human speech, but can efficiently mimic whistles and sounds.

As a general rule, males of the species are better talkers than females, and usually only if they are single birds.

What if your parakeet is turning his head backwards?

Birds are capable of turning their heads almost completely backwards to enable them to reach feathers on their entire body to preen them, and to be able to see all area around them. Your parakeet is perfectly normal.

What do parakeets eat when in the wild?

Since they live in Australia they would eat most of the things you find in your parakeet food. One thing they certainly do not eat is apples. I have 6 parakeets in one huge cage and they love carrots that is an awesome treat. ;)

Can Parakeets eat noodles?

Noodles should be fine for parakeets, as an occasional treat. Don't feed them egg noodles (although these are probably still okay). My cockatiel likes spicy ramen soup. I've had to keep him from climbing into the bowl.

On average how many offspring do parakeets produce each year?

On an average, they can lay 3-5, but my own parakeet just laid her 8th egg. I'm planning to empty her cozy nesting cotton, that I had put for her when she started laying. She found it too comfortable and is on a egg-laying spree.
They only lay one egg at a time . Then they keep laying them .
between 6 to 9
Normally they can have up to 3-8 eggs.

Why do parakeets stay in their nest box?

Depends on what's going on with the birds. If they have eggs or babies, the reason is obvious. If no eggs/babies, some birds like to "hide out" and/or enjoy the comfort and security of enclosed places like a nesting box.

How do you take care of your parakeet?

If you don't know...The best way to find out is to buy a book about your parakeet. By 'green' do you mean an Alexandrian? A Green budgie? A Lineolated parakeet?

Most birds have a lot of things in common that you have to do... feed everyday, provide fresh, clean water everyday, toys, perches, stuff like that, but most different kind of birds need different kind of care.

Go to your local book or pet store and ask if they have a book on the type of parrot you have or will have and take it from there.

you can attend a free mickaboo bird class .

Does a female parakeet need a male parakeet to hatch an egg?

They can, but the egg will obviously not have an embryo inside. This laying causes an incredible amount of stress to the bird, so she must receive calcium supplements. If the egg is removed from the nest/cage, she will likely lay another one, so some pet stores or bird specialty stores carry fake eggs to put in, that won't rot like real eggs, and that will lower the likelihood of her laying more.

How much are parakeets at petco?

somewhere around 15 bucks (give or take a few bucks). My advice: don't buy-instead check the found ads in the paper every day. It's how I got 2 of my 3 birds and a lost bird sure needs a good home!

Does a Parakeet need a companion parakeet to be healthy?

parakeets need partners or they get very lonely when your out of the room, shool, work, ect.

Can the different ages of parakeet stay in the same cage?

Yes, but they probably shouldn't if they are both males, because the older one will pick on the younger one and/or they may not get along too well. Have a second cage on hand, just in case, and let them get to know one another before just forcing them together.

How do you know when parakeets have mated?

You will know when your budgie birds are ready when the pair start to be more active. A male will feed a female and they will tap the beaks together. Just know that a female budgie will be ready when she has a brown/tan color above the beak. (you must have a nest box for the bird to lay her eggs.)

What Country or region of origin does parakeets come from?

Short answer: mostly Australia.

There is actually no such bird as a "parakeet". The term "parakeet" is a generalised term to cover numerous species of smaller, long-tailed parrots. The word tends to be used in countries outside of the birds' native lands. For example, the term "parakeet" is never used in Australia to refer to budgies, lorikeets or cockatiels, all of which are native to Australia, yet these birds are commonly known as "parakeets" overseas.

Birds classified under the name "parakeet" are actually unrelated to each other, except by means of all being in the parrot family. They are all seed, nut and fruit-eaters, with some species feeding off pollen and nectar they get from native flowers - and they do tend to be from Australia.
