From the earliest Motte & Bailey Castles to the massive stone Fortresses still standing today

What were castles made of in 1066?

Most began as wooden mott and bailey types and eventually evolved into stone. The wood structures were very prone to fire and when gun powder was introduced to Europe the wood couldn't withstand the assault from cannon fire.
I'm not sure but i think castles were built of of mud and stone but when that didn't work they were built out of wood. When the they found that the wood caught fire they started to build castles out Stone. After a while people destroyed castles using Gun Powder. Then after this the castles lost there usefulness. Who built Urquhart Castle?

It is not known precisely when the castle was built, but records show the existence of a castle on this site from the early 1200s. The area had been granted to the Durward family in 1229, and they were probably the builders of the castle
It is not know exactly when Urquhart Castle was built or who built it. It is thought possibly to have built by someone in the Durward family, as they took possession of the property in 1229, about the time the castle was built.

In medieval times was it better to live in a town or village?

In the Middle Ages, a village was defined as a community with a church, but without a permanent market place, a town hall, or full time town governmental officials. Most medieval manors had villages on them, because the Church was very interested in providing places of worship to the people on the manors.

Village dwellers were mostly the farmers and other laborers who lived on the manors. There were usually people who worked at trades, including a baker, and possibly a blacksmith, a carpenter, spinners, possibly weavers, potters, and so on. There were also the people who were servants in the manor.

Life was fairly simple, and revolved mostly around the seasons and the farming work needed in the proper times. Fields had to be plowed, crops tended or harvested, and food put away for the winter. Fences had to be mended, repairs to buildings had to be done, and so on. All of this was assigned to members of the community by the reeve, or undertaken according to some tradition.

Everyone was expected to go to church. Everyone was also expected to provide support for the government, for example by attending manorial court, if a person was of class or office that required it.

Though there was no market, there might be fairs every year. Sometimes acting troupes would come through a village and put on a play. There were regular feasts on saint's days. There were sporting events in some villages, such as medieval football.

It was not particularly exciting, unless there was a war, plague, famine, or Viking raids. These were things most people would want not to think about.

What was a round tower used for?

Round towers defended the castle against a cannon better than a wall with a corner. On a castle, a corner was a sort of weak point.

Get it... Corner, point.

Anyway, if a cannon hit a corner then two walls would collapse. And with a round tower, one wall would collapse. So not as much damage would be made.

Also, most of the time there would be another round wall inside the tower so that if the cannon breaks through one wall it would have to go through another.

What surrounds the castle?

The water-filled trench around a castle is called a moat.

Who lived in the Norman Castles?

AnswerMost medieval castles were neglected, and only a few people lived in them. Many of them stood empty or were torn down. The large castles built by Edward I in Wales were big enough to house large numbers of people, but after they were built, they only had garrisons big enough to defend them during times of unrest. Medieval kings and lords preferred not to live in castles because they were crowded and uncomfortable.

The smallest castles had a few guards and provide a place of refuge during emergencies. So their occupants would have been only a few guards. A nearby town might have had the rest of the garrison. A nearby manor house might have been the home of the lord.

Larger castles had garrisons. During time of unrest the garrisons would have had archers and knights sufficient to defend the walls, and a lord might have lived there with his family. Families of the garrisons would likely have been present, as well as clergy to provide for the spiritual well being of the residents. Cooks, stable hands, armorers, and other workers would also have been likely residents.

There is a link below to an article on castles.

Another answer, merged inThe people who lived in a medivial castles were as follows:

Kings, Queens, Knights, Baron, Princes, Princesses, Lords, ladys, bishops, Watchman, Squire, Atillator, Messengers, Cook(s), Chaplain, Castilain, Jester and slave. There might also be a blacksmith and an armoury in the yard. The king and Queen don't usually live in a castle. They would live in their own manor house. They would send a baron to take charge in a castle.

WHAT IS UP BMS
While some castles were grand and comfortable places to live, by the standards of the times, most were defensive forts with some provision for living. The result was that most of the castles' owners preferred to live elsewhere.

For most of the castles, the only residents were soldiers and their families.

If the lord of a castle was living there, then usually his immediate family lived with him. His presence meant that there would be household servants, including kitchen staff, cooks, maids, butlers. He might have had a jester or other performer, but more probably had a steward, who, in turn, had his family there. A priest was often present, as a proper, comfortable castle would have a chapel.

The castle ward was a large, open space. In it there were often small buildings, including stables, barracks, possibly a blacksmith's shop, a large kitchen, and other such buildings. The people who worked in the castle often lived in these areas in cottages or, in an emergency, in tents. They included bakers, smiths, soldiers, grooms, and their families.

As time passed the need for any given castle usually declined, and the garrison moved away. This would leave only custodians, and they would usually only remain as long as someone thought the castle might be brought back to use. This often happened surprisingly fast, and some great castles that took years to build were left only to custodial care only a couple decades later.

With the passing of more time, the owner of a castle might get tired of paying for upkeep, and then it was abandoned, and only squatters and wanderers would live in them.

Strengths And Weaknesses Of A concentric Castle?

Strengths

  • They were harder to attack
  • They had two similar walls so if you got in one you would have to break the other wall
  • There was a fresh water supply
  • Rounded towers could not be mined easily.
  • Larger castles can protect a greater amount of people.
  • Once inside the outer wall the attacker is still visible to defenders in a large number of towers.
  • The symmetrical design ensures that entry to the inner most parts of the castle is closely watched.

How do you take over a castle?

There are many ways: Spies could infiltrate it, opening the gates for your army to enter. You could blast or catapult rocks into the walls until they fall down, allowing your army to get inside. The cheapest way is to get regiments of infantry with ladders to climb up one of the walls and capture a tower, giving them a foothold. Besieging the said castle works also. If no food or other supplies pass into the settlement they will eventually starve and surrender. It would also be possible to undermine the walls. This means digging under the wall and setting fire to the supporting timbers, causing the walls to topple.
