Hyperthyroidism itself is unlikely to be fatal to a cat. However, if left untreated there are health issues that could become fatal: The increased heart rate of a hyperthyroid cat can put great strain on the heart, and can cause Heart Failure. Liver damage can be caused by it having to work harder due to the increased metabolism, or increased fat deposits if the cat develops Hepatic Lipiosis (see below).

The most common sign that a cat is hyperthyroid is significant weight loss, but an increased appetite. Even this cannot go unchecked as the cat could become emaciated, which puts a strain on the body and organs. Another worry is Hepatic Lipidosis, also known as Fatty Liver Disease. This is caused when a cat loses a significant amount of weight in a short period of time. Stored fat in the cat's body is moved to the liver. Unfortunately, a cat's body is not designed to process large amounts of fat, and this can cause the liver to become overwhelmed and is unable to process this fat as quickly as necessary, leading to a build up of fat in the liver, which interferes with normal liver function.

All these secondary complications can be fatal if not treated quickly.

Your cat needs to be checked out by your Veterinarian as it could be from many different things. It could be from fleas, fleas spend very little time actually on the animal. You should use a once a month flea repellent, such as Front Line made especially for cats only, just put it on topically once a month. It also could be from an under-active thyroid or diabetes. So that is why your cat should be checked out by your Vet. Make sure you have your kitty on a good brand name of cat food and not some generic cat food. If it is from fleas, you need to get the fleas off and your Vet may need to give your kitty some injections to reduce the inflammation that is set up in the skin from the reaction to the fleas. You also need to know if this is caused by something else, such as the things I mentioned above. Good luck.

It's not very likely, but you could get cat scratch fever. Or nothing at all. Those irritations in the skin won't do any harm as long as you treat it with some kind of skin cleaner ie. soap, peroxide, antibiotics, ect. You should be fine

No, most cats hate the smell of cigarettes. Most animals, in general, hate the smell of cigarettes, because they are toxic and essentially poisonous. That is why animals don't drink alcohol, either: alcohol is essentially a poison.

Unlike humans, animals cannot override their primal instinct to stay away from toxic substances. Humans ingest toxic substances like tobacco, alcohol, or illegal drugs, because they make us feel good. Our desire to take pleasure in these toxic substances overrides our primal instinct to stay away from anything toxic.

Animals don't have the brain capacity to take pleasure in toxic substances. An animal can get drunk or high, but it probably won't enjoy it. It will just be frightened by the effects. Ironically, the higher intelligence that humans possess enables us to make the rather stupid decision to deliberately ingest toxic substances, just because they make us feel good.
