What did mothers do in the 1700s?

The women of the 1700's had a great deal to do. If they were in the American colonies they were very busy. The colonies were 93% farmers so the women had to help establish the farm and they lived in a small house with a fireplace for heat and cooking using candles for light. They had to bring in buckets of water, heat the water to do the laundry. That was a 2-3 day job from start to finish. They had to make the candles, butter, cook, care for the children. Often they died young in childbirth so many men had two or three wives in a lifetime. They helped care for the farm animals, milk the cows, plow the fields, pick the crops, and get the chickens fed and gather the eggs. Children as young as 2 had jobs on the farm and most often young children died of diseases or accidents. Life wasn't easy.
