I have purchased several shotguns including the Charles Daly. The easy answer is yes it is worth purchasing; however, be aware that you get what you pay for. I am guessing that your interest is in purchasing a shotgun in the $300 to $400 range. My Charles Daly has so far proven to be reliable with proper maintenance and I would recommend these for the price. It is not the same quality gun as a Browning, Benelli or Beretta, and I suspect does not have the "snob" factor associated with these other manufacturers. What Charles Daly does provide is a simple, lightweight shotgun at an affordable price. In this same price range a person might consider a quality pump action shotgun such as the Benelli Nova or Remington 870. In my case I already owned a Nova and simply wanted an inexpensive semiautomatic for field use.

I just traded for a Charles Daly Superior II, and I did some research on it I have seen It selling for around $800, but I've also read that it all depends on the serial number and they can be valued any where from $250-$8000. I really cant find anything about the serial numbers, mine is 89072, so If you end up finding info on the serial number please share.

The term "Hawkens" today defines a style of rifle popularized by the Hawkens brother, gunsmiths who operated out of St Louis, Mo., back in the early to mid 1800's. This style, when compared to the earlier "Kentucky" style, is generally thought of as a rather stout, rugged, large caliber, cap lock rifle. The trademark "John Daly" is today owned by K.B.I. Inc.( I believe) who import a wide varity of firearms. Your rifle is, of course, a recent reproduction of that famous Hawkens rifle. The trademark "John Daly" has been in use for approx. 125 years and has a very convoluted histroy. You can think of this rifle as the type that Kit Carson or Jedidiah Smith would have carried in their beaver trapping days.

Seriously. Without being able to examine the weapon, there isn't a person in their right mind who would even ATTEMPT to diagnose the issue. It could be any NUMBER of things, from firing pin to springs to trigger or even ammunition. Until you have that weapon checked out by a licensed gunsmith it should be considered unsafe.
