In the wild chinchillas eat fruits, plants, seeds, insects and sometimes tree bark.

Chinchillas are known for their precious, soft fur and many people kill chinchillas for their fur coats. Whether it is illegal now or not is still a mystery to me, as far as I know.

According to my observations, I belive chinchillas are vulnerable to infection or disease They can be quite cold around other chinchillas and can end up fighting as well.

Wild chinchillas reside in the Andes Mountains, in Chile, where they have a low chance of survival due to climate and prey.

Bouncer was 27 years old on the 1st of July in 2008. Bouncer was born on the 1st of July in 1977 on a chinchilla ranch in Nottingham. The oldest chinchilla in America lived to be 26.

I have my own and she barks when im gone and when she first moved in but i have also heard that when they have bad dreams they bark. someone told me that use it as a warming call for other chinchillas in the area to flee from danger. :] hope this helps

yes the chinchilla does,I have one of my own and he loves when I scratch him behind his ear but it's not like scratching a cator dog it's really careful and gentle.

chinchilla should not be given fruit. fruit is gassy and gassy foods can cause a chinchilla to bloat and bloat can kill a chinchilla if not caught in time and treated.

The answer is yes, but the likelihood is extremely low. Any warm blooded animal can potentially contract the rabies virus from another warm blooded animal. A Chinchilla stays inside and is most likely caged. If it was outside and a rabid animal bit it it would probably die from its wounds. The only possibility would come from a rabid bat entering the home and coming in direct contact with the pet. I would say you have much better odds of being hit on the crapper by meteorite while talking on the phone with Osama.

It is almost impossible without an ultra-sound preformed by the vet, but very few chinchillas will let you do this with out becoming stressed. Some signs to look for are; 1) a copulatory plug just after mating not proof of pregnancy but proof of mating. 2) movement of the kits inside their mum can sometimes be seen after 60 day or so. 3) pegnant chinchillas can lay down more than usual and become restless when the kits are kicking them. 4) nipples may elongate and become visable a few weeks before birth. This is quite noticable as they can be around 1cm in length. 5) pregant chinchillas can get grumpy near to giving birth, clicking at their partners and you 6) some chinchillas even stop eating a few days before the birth. If you are breeding chinchillas you may want to weigh them at regular intervals as this will show the chinchillas normal weigh and therefore the weight gain due to pregnancy. This method gives you a much more reliable guide without the stress of ultra-sound.

They have a variety of calls but spend the majority of there time very quiet. Bark - Sounds very similar to a small dog and is there alarm call. Chattering - Made during grooming sessions and when interacting with each other. Grunts - Like a sigh and usually when they are trying to attract attention.

I don't believe that chinchillas hibernate or estivate.

Yes! Intact, they need a marble piece in their cages to cool them down. Chinchillas bodies are built for cold, they have a really thick, warm coat to keep them warm!

don't worry about the tap water, yes tap is full of chemicals, but generally not anough to harm a chinchilla. if you are worried about it though you can give your chinchilla bottled water. my chinchillas drink tap all the time and are quite healthy.

to let it have a good life you will need a glass cage about a meter long and 30cm high. you will also need to make/buy climing things leading to a hut(house) that it can enter were you could feed and sleep. you can even put hye (however you spell that) on the floor.decorate with real leaves or fake. then it will love you 4ever.

pellets. Hay. Water. Period. With the occasional treat.

Do not get the Fiesta brand however. It is too sweet.

Get the pellets with only pellets in it.. otherwise it might eat only the non-pellets.

Get hay that is not in cubes.

Water.. just.. plain water. Don't add anything and don't use tap.

The occasional treat:

(don't give them too sugary stuff)

(note: I'm not meaning you can give all of these. just the rate at which you can give each. Do not give 1 raisin a month AND 1 out a day AND .... if you get what I mean..)

(raisins maybe 1 a month)

or

(1-2 oats per day)

or

(1 dandelion every 3 days)

or

(0.5 cheerios a day)

or

(1/3 slice of dried banana every 2 days)

or

(1/6 slice of dried apple every 2 days)

or

(1-2 sunflower seeds per day)

NEVER EVER give them chocolates or coffee. they will die.
