Most "christian" bands would not say things like this in that tone.

Just because a band talks about "christianity" or "god" absolutely doesn't mean they are religious. It is merely on the bands mind and in their lyrics..whether that be in a negative way or positive way. Moreover if you read enough of their lyrics, they talk about god, savior, etc as a parallel. Many religious bands (particularly christian) put god/jesus on this pedistal above everything. "Brand New's" lyrics have an element of being parallel, almost conversationally, humorously, about "god".
