Is codeine a controlled substance?

Yup, Codeine along with Thebaine and Morphine are the primary 3 alkaloids found in the Papaver somniferum (opium) plant. All of them are controlled substance because of their recreational value and/or ability to create semi-synthetic recreational narcotics like Heroin and Oxycodone.

On a side note these Opium based drugs (eg. Codeine) are in no way related to the benzodiazepine family of drugs (eg. Xanax), while they both have recreational value for the most part, they effect the brain in a very different way and the "high" is very different from one another.

Does codeine and Valium help anxiety?

"

does Valium have codein in it".

Valium aka diazepam does not contain codeine. Valium helps the physical symptoms of anxiety such as palpitations, panic attacks, shaking etc, but does nothing for the mental state of mind.

Codeine works for mental anxiety in the short term at a dosage of around 90mg upwards to a maximum of around 200mg. This produces a moderate euphoria, and state of contentedness and detachment which lasts around 4 hours. This is not much use for long term anxiety as it is addictive and is very unlikely to be prescribed for anything other than pain.

If I had to choose one for a one off occasion of bad anxiety I would choose codeine. Doses above 90mg will cause some drowsiness and may be too high for some people who haven't ever used codeine. Doses higher than 250mg are likely to cause noticeable side affects such as itching and nausea. The average lethal dose of codeine is 800mg, so be careful.
