Cold and Flu

Questions and answers about the "Common Cold"; symptoms in the upper respiratory tract like sneezing, scratchy throat, and runny nose, but adults don't typically have fevers. Colds are usually caused by the rhinovirus (up to 40% of colds), or Coronaviruses (about 20%), but there are more than 200 viruses that can cause the common cold. Also questions about the seasonal flu, also called "regular flu", caused mostly by Type A and Type B Influenza viruses. Flu starts with similar symptoms as a cold only it hits faster and harder and usually includes fever in adults. Although the "stomach flu" is a common term, it is not a real diagnosis. The proper medical term for stomach flu is gastroenteritis (an intestinal disease, sometimes viral but also bacterial), it is often mistaken for influenza because the flu can sometimes include vomiting and diarrhea.

What keeps cold germs alive and what do they live on?

Cold germs are viruses which are not alive like bacteria and some other germs are. Viruses are essentially a group of chemicals, proteins, and genetic materials that work together as an infectious organism. They can only function inside a host animal or plant and they use the materials and actions of the invaded cells of the host to replicate themselves. So the thing that keeps the cold viruses "alive" and provides the viruses with the materials they need to replicate, is the host.

Can you have both a seasonal flu shot and a Swine Flu shot?

For the 2011-2012 flu season:

In the US, there may still be some of the 2009-2010 season monovalent H1N1 vaccine, you could ask your health care professional and pharmacist if it will be available for you in the upcoming flu season. But, for the 2011-2012 flu season, it will be included as part of the trivalent seasonal flu shot and won't be separate like in 2009.

According to the information from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention about the 2011-2012 vaccine, the flu vaccine protects against the three main flu strains that research indicates will cause the most illness during the flu season. This year's influenza vaccine contains the following three influenza virus strains.

The 2011--12 U.S. seasonal influenza vaccine virus strains are identical to those contained in the 2010--11 vaccine. These include A/California/7/2009 (H1N1)-like, A/Perth/16/2009 (H3N2)-like, and B/Brisbane/60/2008-like antigens. The influenza A (H1N1) vaccine virus strain is derived from a 2009 pandemic influenza A (H1N1) virus

The strain of H1N1 influenza listed above that is included in the 2011-2012 seasonal flu vaccine in the US, is the same that caused the H1N1 Pandemic "Swine" Flu in 2009. A separate vaccination for that will not be required and if you had it before, it will not hurt to get it again and might help.

How can you tell if it is a cold or flu?

The same way as between a cold and regular flu. With a cold you'll just have the standard sore throat, cough, runny nose, possibly slight fever. If you're getting into throwing up/diarrhea/temperature over 100 degrees, that's when you are beyond the cold.

It's also worth noting that flu is mainly characterised by symptoms like dizziness, high fever (as noted above) diarrhea and vomiting, muscle aches, shortness of breath and lung restriction (finding it painful to take a full breath) and headaches. Your common cold symptoms are likely to occur alongside any of the above symptoms. (Common cold symptoms include sneezing, sore throats, runny noses, irritable cough, congested sinuses, etc)

Why is food less palatable when you have a cold?

When you are sick with something like the flu, it can make it difficult to smell things. Swollen sinuses or a blocked nose can be the cause of this for you. When you taste something, more than half of the flavor comes from the smell of it. For example, eating a potato, apple, and onion with your nose pinched, will all taste the same. Another (less likely) reason could be that you have a layer of mucus built up on your tongue with the cold, use your toothbrush to brush off your tongue when you brush your teeth to see if that will help.

Why isn't it okay to cough or sneeze on food if you have a cold?

Even though you might not be sick, you still carry bacteria and even viruses in and on your body. Your sneeze or cough could still contaminate food.

How do you treat infected tonsils?

I have been plagued by these things for years. What doesn't work: Clearing your throat, rinsing with salt water or mouthwash etc, and sneezing What works but not the best: Scraping your tonsils with a finger, q-tip, etc. It will work sometimes but not all the time. Also these tend to be very painful if you make multiple attempts. I have had my throat bleed because of it. Also you can gag yourself ... not fun.

TONSOLITHS FIX: PLEASE READ THIS! IT WILL SAVE YOU A LOT OF GRIEF!

I just fixed my tonsil stone problem!

I'm not into alternative remedies, but after using a combination of amoxicillin and flonase to no avail, I decided to take matters into my own hands:

I went to the pharmacy and picked up a small plastic syringe (without a needle-- DO NOT USE A NEEDLE!), which Walgreens actually gave to me for free, as they don't sell them.

I filled the syringe with a mild saline solution made from nasal irrigation salts in water.

I put the syringe into the pockets in the back of my throat and fired! Presto! A heap of tonsoliths, hidden way down in the recess, came popping out. I immediately repeated this a few times until the tonsoliths stopped appearing. It's been a week, and I've re-irrigated a few times, just to make sure, but I think I've cured myself! Nothing has popped out since that first cathartic rinse. And my bad breath is gone.

The bacteria that causes the tonsoliths sits in the recesses in the tonsils, so it's really hard to remove all our tonsoliths.

When I decided to irrigate my tonsils, I thought that I had succeeded in removing all my tonsoliths through pressure and prodding with a Q-tip-- I thought that the irrigation would just kill the bacteria and prevent the formation of any others. I had no idea that the cavities in the tonsil run so deep. No wonder clearing a few tonsoliths manually had achieved little in the way of curing my bad breath!

So, my advice is to irrigate, and not to poke around with your tonsils using your fingers or anything else. A neat jet of water, and you're done!

PS. I've also tried irrigating with Listerine, in an attempt to make sure I've killed the bacteria. Not sure which is better, but I'd start with saline as it's milder.

How do you fight a flu?

Isolate the sick person with flue and hand washing with soap and water before and after you get in contact with the person with flue.Keep your hand clean at all time and when you sneeze cover your mouth.

How long after being exposed to shingles will you get it?

IF you're going to get chickenpox from a shingles exposure, it would take between 10 and 21 days to get chickenpox.

You'd have to never have had chickenpox before to get shingles, however, even if you'd never had chickenpox, you still might not catch them from being exposed to shingles.

Who did the Spanish flu affect?

It was a pandemic, so it affected the entire world and all age groups, including the young and healthy. Because it hit during World War 1, many soldiers were sick with the disease and also helped to spread it around the world, as they came and went from home and battlefield.

What vitamins should you take for a sore throat?

Technically, vitamin C would probably be better--if your sore throat is a symptom of flu, the common cold, or other viral (and even bacterial) infections. That's as far as I know. I have heard that zinc can be used to help reduce symptoms of the common cold, but frankly vitamin C is a pretty amazing immune system booster.

Anyway, thanks so very much for all of your time!

God bless!

Why do doctors need to make a new flu vaccine every year?

World scientists and epidemiologists, along with the World Health Organization (WHO) and the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) begin determining each year which viruses (antigens) need to be in the vaccines for the upcoming flu season at the time the prior flu season ends (or before). They predict which viruses will be circulating in the next flu season in the Western hemiphere by studying the viruses in circulation in the Eastern hemisphere, since those viruses will be heading our way for the next season.

For the 2013-2014 flu season:

In addition to the other ingredients added by the manufacturers of the vaccines, the specific antigens to be included have been selected by CDC for the US trivalent vaccines. For the 2013-2014 flu season, the vaccine contains the following three viruses:

  • Type A/California/7/2009 (H1N1)pdm09-like virus;
  • Type A(H3N2) virus antigenically like the cell-propagated prototype virus known as A/Victoria/361/2011; and,
  • Type B/Massachusetts/2/2012-like virus.

They have recommended that the 2013-2014 quadrivalent vaccines (containing two Type A and two Type B influenza viruses) contain the above three viruses and a Type B/Brisbane/60/2008-like virus.

What can a rhinovirus cause?

Strains of Rhinoviruses are the frequent causes of the common cold. Colds are usually caused by the rhinovirus (up to 40% of colds), or Coronaviruses (about 20%), but there are more than 200 viruses that can cause the common cold.

Do doctors lie to patients?

It depends on the doctor and the circumstances. It probably falls into one of these categories:

1. For the good of the patients. If multiple people were admitted to the hospital from a fire, wreck, or other tragedy, doctors may tell the survivors that everyone made it or were okay, even if some died on the way to the hospital. They may do this to help the recovery of the patients they can help, since if they knew the truth, they might give up the desire to live, and their condition might get worse. This might also include cases where an adult asks about surgery that was done on them as a child that they didn't consent to, thinking such information might harm their mental state or cause them to harm someone.

In mental patients, doctors might play along with their delusions in order to help keep them comfortable and for the good of the other patients. Would it be good to have a patient yelling at the top of their lungs all night long and keep patients up over something a doctor said when telling them the truth won't help them to get better?

2. Unintentionally. A doctor may not have all the information about something and may speak before having all the facts. In a trauma case involving multiple patients, different patients may be sent to different doctors, and if a patient asks about a loved one sent to another doctor, the doctor can only guess. The other person might have just died or something, and the doctor won't know that. Or a doctor may be misinformed about something, like a treatment, and they don't know all the risks and something bad happens, and they later hear something that contradicts what they were told previously.

3. Liability and fear of lawsuits. They might withhold information or bend the truth if it will possibly keep them out of a lawsuit.

4. In jest. Some doctors get tired or frustrated and may joke around as a form of levity and tension release. Someone might not get the joke and take it at face value and may assume they were told a lie.

5. Greed or hard times. Doctors are humans like everyone else and can give into the same temptations. So some may say someone has a condition they don' have to be able to treat them for it. Or they may perform unnecessary tests.

6. Conspiracy, collusion or racketeering. Luckily this situation is rare, but it is possible for doctors of an area to take advantage of patients or give substandard care and back each other up in it. If a patient wants a second opinion, the doctor will insist that they see one who is in on the racket with them.

Can garlic cure head colds?

Garlic & Onions have Allicin and Sulfur Compounds in them that is an antimicrobial, fungicidal and antiviral as well as being a natural Antibiotic.

The strong smell in both these plants is where their strengths lie.

Once cooked the plants no longer have germ killing properties, it has to be RAW!

But garlic is your real key, it is stronger than onions.

You don't even have to chew it!

Just slice or break it open (the inside of the cloves have to be exposed) into pieces small enough to swallow whole.

Swallow like a pill without chewing.

Eat a piece of bread first if you get indigestion easily.

It fits in your pocket and lasts forever before going bad!

Take with Vitamin-C and Vitamin-D for added protection!

When did the Swine Flu occur in the US recently?

The first cases in the US were discovered in March and early April in two people, one in Southern California and one near San Antonio, Texas.

What bacteria causes H1N1?

Types:

There are actually three types of flu virus, known as A, B and C. Type A is the worst, as it is the type that causes flu pandemics every few years. Type B typically causes smaller influenza outbreaks that are usually localized. However, it can also be responsible for epidemics. The mildest flu virus is Type C and when it is contracted it only causes mild symptoms or none at all. According to MedicineNet, flu viruses are continually mutating to defeat the antibodies that a person develops after previous infections.

Causes:

Infections by a flu virus are typically caused by airborne transmission. An inflected person sneezes or coughs in the vicinity of others, giving the flu virus the opportunity to enter their bodies when they breathe droplets expelled by the carrier person. An influenza infection can also be caused by touching an object that was previously touched and infected by someone with the flu. This allows the virus to get on an uninfected person's hands. When he touches his eyes, nose, or mouth, it enters his body and he can become ill with typical symptoms like a headache, chills, a fever, sore throat, coughing, congestion and an aching body. Adults over age 50 are at a greater risk for contracting the flu, as are those with fragile immune systems.

Why take the H1N1 vaccine?

When you get swine flu, several symptoms occur:

First you have a really bad cough, and some breathing problems

Some people experience nausea and vomiting

A few days after exposure you get a fever

Fatigue and aches and pains follow

Coughing worsens

This goes on for about a week

After a week, symptoms are relieved to some coughing and a fever

After 24 hours of no fever you are no longer contagious

Then your immune system defeats the virus and you are resistant

(I should know, I had it!)
Hope that helped

Is rhinovirus a living thing?

Mostly No. A rhinovirus is a type of virus. A virus does not completely fit the accepted definition of a living entity.

Did a DJ in the capital of the African country Abijan invent a bird flu dance to stop people being scared to eat chicken?

That is the story that began circulating in July 2006. See the article below in the links section for more information. The DJ, DJ Lewis, from Abijan on Africa's Ivory Coast, supposedly said that he did start the dance, and is credited with the following quotes:

"People will have to dance it, they have no choice!

"I am telling people to dance it to chase away their fears, and eat more chicken."

"I created the dance to bring happiness to the hearts of Africans, and to chase away fear, the fear of eating chicken" he told the BBC.

"If we kill all our chickens and poultry, our cousins in the village will become poor."

"So I created the bird flu dance to put joy back into our hearts."

How does influenza attack the body?

Influenza, or "flu," is a caused by a virus infecting the respiratory system, meaning your nose, throat, bronchial tubes, and lungs. Flu symptoms are usually more severe than those of the common cold and are more likely to affect other parts of your body. Flu also tends to come on suddenly, while colds can take a while to develop.

Flu is very contagious, spreading easily from one person to the next. Most people with healthy immune systems will get over the flu within 2 weeks, but young children, older adults, and people with chronic illnesses are more likely to develop complications such as pneumonia. About 35,000 people die of flu each year in the United States.

There are three types of flu viruses: A, B, and C. Type A viruses are the ones responsible for worldwide epidemics, such as the one in 1918 that killed as many as 50 million people worldwide. The avian or bird flu is a type A flu virus.

The best way to protect yourself from the flu is to get an annual vaccine (flu shot).

Influenza is caused by viruses that are spread through the air by sneezes and coughs, or by touching a surface a person with the flu has touched and transmitting the virus to your mouth or nose. Some flu viruses cause a very mild illness, or none at all. Others cause serious, widespread illness.

Since there are many types of influenza virus, and because they change over time, a new flu vaccine is offered every fall. Getting vaccinated before the flu season starts reduces your chances of getting the flu and helps you recover faster if you do get it. You should not take the vaccine if you have a severe allergy to eggs, because the viruses for the vaccines are grown in chick embryos. See Risk Factors for list of people who should get the

What is a good cough medicine for babies 10 month old?

Most non-prescription drugs aren't meant for babies under 3 years old. You should really visit a doctor or the hospital for inquiries like that, as professionals will know what medicine is safe for a baby to consume.

How many people died from the flu vaccination?

i think its 1000s

I had mine yesterday! I am 12 nearly 13! I am in year 8! you can have it at any age between 12 years old (in year 8) and 18 years old!

I was petrified before having it - my friends who had it before me didn't help! they were crying and everything and they had already had it! me and my bff were crying and on the way to the room to get it a lady said that we should both go to the nurses room and waited for ages (around an hour and a half) then we got it! one of our other bffs had had it earlier and was with us the whole time we were waiting! then we went at the end and i felt a absalute twit! it didn't hurt at all! plus i got a free biscuit!

it didn't hurt at all! the only negative points about it was -
that you worry and feel horrible before it
your arm hurts if you move it after (mine is stiff today) which is why i had the day off!
