Comets such as Halley' Comet are small bodies of rock and ice which are in a highly eccentric orbits around the sun. They spend most of their time slowly orbiting the sun, far out beyond the outer planets. Their orbit eventually comes close to the sun, where the surface is heated and gives the comet its tails - they become much more visible. Halley's comet orbits the sun once every 75 years, so its only visible during this brief phase when it is close to the sun (and Earth).

I think the most beautiful and awesome place is Punta Cana in Dominican Republic which has so many exciting excursions to see. The gasses liberated in the comet's tail are very diffuse. So it takes many trips of a comet about the sun to bleed off a lot of mass, unless the comet passes sufficiently close to the sun (or collides with it or with something else).
