Can a bank legally modify your checking account without warning or your approval?

Your bank can deduct amounts from your own accounts for several reasons. If you cash a check that cannot be collected by the bank the bank will deduct the amount of the check from any of your accounts that has a balance. It can do the same if you overdraw one of your accounts. You gave the bank permission to do so when you opened your accounts. The bank can take bank fees from your account and also fees for check orders.

Who is the guy in the ally bank commercial?

The children in the Ally Bank commericals are not actors but children who thought they were being brought in to market research.

I disagree - the funny lil chubby guy grew up to be Brad - and he now works at capital city aviation.

www.capitalcityaviation.com

INCORRECT! The kid in the Ally Bank Commercial is named Pete Wiggins... He has also been in the Kaiser Permanente commercial (Kid Wisdom). He has appeared on the Ellen Degeneres show (cute little guy!), and you can look him up on IMDB, as well as visit his facebook page.

Actually All the kids are actors in Commercials and they were not told they were doing a market research. They new they were doing a commercial they just didn't know how the commercial was going to play out. But the parents and Gardians did.

If fraud was report to check systems can you open a bank account after filing bankruptcy?

A bank can still report to check systems, but they can NOT report a balance. If you included the account on your bankruptcy, they must change they amount owed to a zero balance. They can put a note saying it was in a bankruptcy though.

I should think so.

While you are protected from certain actions creditors may have been otherwise been able to take to collect the debt, Bankruptcy doesn't mean your actions are unreportable or your not responsible for them. (If anything, just the opposite, almost everything becomes of record, and you are responsible to do certain things or lose the protections granted).

Nor does BK change the reporting record of things that already happened...the history you make is the one you live with.

Which bank offers the best free online checking accounts?

Feel free to explore, but both ING Direct* and Ally Bank offer great rates for their savings accounts and checking accounts. First National Bank of Omaha (FNBO) also offers online accounts for savers out there- I believe that they have a checking account as well. American Express also offers banking to individuals whether you carry one of their cards or not, but for now they only offer a high-yield savings account. If you choose to get an American Express savings account but need an online-based checking account, check out the current offers from PerkStreet.

One thing to note: since you are dealing with a bank that may not have a physical branch, you will need to fund your online account either by sending in checks made out to yourself or making an electronic transfer from another bank.

* edit: ING Direct was renamed Capital One 360 after being acquired by Capital One. They were purchased in mid-late 2012 and launched the new name at the start of 2013

Is bank account an a bank deposit account the same?

No. A bank account can be a checking or savings. It is the account in your name where you deposit and withdrawl funds from. A bank deposit is when you put money into the account either by you walking into the bank and handing them cash or a check and the bank teller processes it to be put into your account. They are two different things but they are related.

How soon before moving should I open a new checking account?

In your new area of residence you mean? I never bother until I am already moved in and settled. Checks from the old account work just fine, assuming you are leaving your old account open. Most people who take checks are more than willing to accept that you just moved and have yet to open a new account. They may ask you to cross out the old address and write a new one, or they may ask for your driver's license.

If you order checks without the address on them (you have to ask for this specifically) you can leave the account open and use the checks indefinately without hassle, especially now that most accessing of bank accounts is done online or electronically these days.

Can you tell which bank from the routing number on your checks?

Yes, as far as I know with English bank cards there is a 16 digit number across the front, the first four digits correspond with what kind of card it is ie Visa, Amex, Switch/Maestro, etc. The Sort Code, another 6 digit number, then corresponds more specifically to the bank at which your account is held. Hope that helps!

Not likely.

Can you open a checking account in another state if the past one has an outstanding balance?

The other bank will likely have reported your activity to chex systems. I advise you pay off the old bank account before opening a new one. It is unlikely that you will be able to open a new account.
