Id card printers work with 2 processes. The color process is a YMC dye-sublimation in which dye is vaporized from a print ribbon and bonds to a pvc card stock. Sometime early in 2011 HP sent an update through (down loadable) that carried code which allows their printers to recognize refurbished, refilled and re-manufactured cartridges. I believe it solved the problem, because after about 35 trial-and-error pages, the problem's solved.
