I'm guessing it was a sort of luck charm. The symbols on the cards could represent the soldier in some way. Or, maybe it was some way to identify certain people in your unit. Or yet again it couldve just been a wartime "fad" just the thing to do at the time. I do know for a fact that the Ace of Spades is the Death Card in which the hardest soldiers might wear.

I want to take a road trip with my family this upcoming summer. We want to drive from Omaha Nebraska to the Rocky Mountains in Colorado, then drive from there to the Grand Canyon in Arizona, and eventually end up in Long Beach California, see the sights. Then drive back.

More than 175,000 Allied soldiers took part in the D-Day invasion.

D-day is toe first day of the Landing at Normandy of the US and British troops during WWII. the US troops landed at Utah and Omaha beaches. The British landed at Gold, Juno and Sword beaches. The worst of the fighting occured on Omaha beach. The fighting started on June 6, 1944 and was considered won on the beachhead June 30, 1944

Exact figures should be available somewhere, but I can tell you that casualties were lighter than expected on Utah, Gold, Sword, and Juno. Less than 200 were killed on Utah, a handful for a division-sized attack, compared to the 800+ killed in Operation Tiger (the secret rehearsal for Normandy) at Slapton Sands, England). * It is not all about the percentages. The actor Charles Durning was a US soldier at Omaha. His boot came untied and he bent over to tie it. A German bullet killed the soldier in front of him and the soldier in back of him. Durning was understandably affected by the experience, and as a result he will not make war movies. * If percentages cannot be found, it is still possible to find strength and casualty figures for Operation Overlord (D-Day) and crunch the numbers yourself. And don't forget the Airborne divisions.

'Bloody Omaha' was one of two US invasion beaches in the D Day invasion of Normandy: June 6th 1944. (The other was Utah on the Cotentin peninsula) There were significant casualties because of the defenders enfilading the beach as the forces landed. Nonetheless it was a success, but the costs on Omaha were higher than the other beaches. (Gold, Juno & Sword)

28,845 troops landed on Sword Beach . These were in the British 8th, 9th,and 185th Brigades and #48 Royal Marine Commando.

This included the Army, Navy and the Army Air Corps(which was part of the army before the Air Force was a separate branch).

Most of the German High Command including Hitler thought the invasion would happen at Calais, which is the closest point to England. The Allies went to great lengths to encourage this belief including setting up huge fake army camps in the area opposite Calais complete with tanks,trucks and tents made of cardboard and rubber.

The strategy of Overlord was to confuse the Germans as to where and when landings would take place, and to land the maximum number of men and armoured vehicles by sea and air on the FIRST day. The sheer power of 175,000 men with many AFV's worked and forced the Germans back.

Germany casualties were unclear for the whole day. However at least 1,000 Germans are known to have died on Sword Beach.

The short term goal of D-day was to establish a foothold on the European continent so that the allies could start their long walk across Europe reclaiming it from Nazi Germany. While the allies were motivated by many philosophical, political, theological, and humanitarian reasons the primary goal was to ensure that freedom and democracy prevail over fascism and dictatorship.

The attacks were in separate points, there was Parachute landings and beach landings. The beach landings took place on Normandy France, the code name for the beaches were: Sword, Juno, Omaha, Gold and point Du Hoc beach. The landings took place on June,6 1944
