It happened because he could not conquer Russia and his troops were tied down in a long struggle that required a long supply line to reinforce it. But these exposed guns may have been destroyed by air and naval barrages. The battleship USS Texas shelled Point du Hoc prior to the Ranger Battalion amphibious assault on the German defenses.
