Daniel Boone (2 November 1734 - 26 September 1820) brought the first group of settlers to Kentucky in September of 1773. Among the group who were massacred was Daniel Boone's eldest son, James. The settlement was abandoned. Because of a 1775 treaty, land was bought from the Cherokee and a colony was established called Transylvania. Boone was hired to blaze a trail into the area, during which time he marked a path to the Kentucky River where he founded Boonesborough. Settlers were brought into Boonesborough in September of 1775.

It is highly unlikely that Hawken would have supplied a rifle to as prominent a figure as Boone three years earlier with no historic record.

In 1767, he found harsh winter conditions, so bad that he had to return to North Carolina. In 1769 the found the Warriors Path through the Cumberland Gap (a Shawnee and Cherokee war-and-hunting trail). This time he found fertile land rich with game. However, within two years, he found Shawnee Indians, or the Indians found him, and he was warned out of the land.
