Deafness and Hearing Loss

Deaf or hearing impaired people have either complete or partial hearing loss. These people often require the use of hearing aids or sign language to hear and communicate. Hard of hearing people are those who suffer from a form of partial hearing loss usually caused by aging or trauma.

What does an agx7 cost hearing aid?

$6,000 per pair as of 2/4/14

Can't get discounts either.

Can deafness be cured?

its possible, but not all deaf want to become hearing...... There is a device called a Cochlear Implant, it amazing. i have one. its a miracle. :)

The Cochlear Implant puts a magnet into your head and it captured the extra sound and sends it to the cochlea which sends to the brain.

If someone is deaf can they make noises?

Yes, they can.

You don't need to be able to hear sound just to sing. Sound is based on vibrations. Deaf people are extremely good at harnessing vibrations, they can hit all the right notes with their voice by "hearing" the vibrations of their voice vibrating in their throat and cranium.

Mandy Harvey, Rudi Carrell, Johnnie Ray, and Pete Townshend are a few of the famous deaf/hard-of-hearing singers that spring into mind.

What happens to the body when you become deaf?

  • the three common signs of hearing loss are:

    1)excessive hair growth in ear

    2)clear urine

    3)uncontrollable blinking

(also some loss of hearing is also a part of hearing loss)

  • I have not heard of the three signs described by the previous writer of hearing loss, but some common symptoms which I am aware of are: struggling to hear conversation where there is background noise, having to turn the TV volume or radio volume up to hear and sometimes a ringing in the ears known as tinnitus. See the related link entitled "tinnitus claim" to know your rights if tinnitus and hearing loss is as a result of noise exposure at work.

How does listening to loud music damage your ears?

Well, as Jeremy Spitzer once said, "Music is a force the must not be taunted because it will get back at you and your ears and make you sorry." The waves and vibrations of the music pound into your delicate eardrum, located close behind the hammer and anvil. Sound, which is collected by your outside, visible ear (the pinna) travels through the outer ear canal. Your eardrum then vibrates as well as the 3 mini bones around it.... the anvil, hammer, and stirrup. All named those names because of their shapes. This vibration goes to the cochlea, (a snail like spiral), which has many little hairs that have nerve signals sent to the brain. If you listen to loud music, the hairs fall off. and you go def.

How do you get hearing loss?

There can be many reasons for hearing loss like genetic problem, disease or infection aging or head trauma or exposure to loud sound. The best way to avoid hearing loss is to try to remain safe using ear plug or safety muffs when encountering loud sound.

Hearing loss can occur for a number of reasons. It can be the result of a genetic problem that affects the ear, disease and infection, aging, trauma to the ear or head, and exposure to loud sound.

How do you insert a hearing aid?

I have very large fingers and i dont have the answer. Someone should make a device that fits on your finger to hold the hearing aid earbud while installing.

What is the meaning of the idiom to be hard of hearing?

If a person is "hard of hearing" it means they find it hard to hear things, they either have a congenital hearing problem or for some reason (eg age, disease or industrial injury) they are going deaf.

What treatment can you get if you are deaf?

There are numerous treatments that may help someone with a hearing impairment. Dumb is a perspective just because someone has different skills sets does not make them less intelligent then another.

Can an ear infection cause deafness?

Some types of hearing loss can be caused by problems which may be treated medically, such as ear infections or a perforated ear-drum. These types of loss can often improve. So the Chance of being deaf due to ear infection is small.

Deafness due to ear infections is extrememly rare. But there is a slight risk. Most likely what happens with people is the ear goes deaf for a few days or even more rarely weeks.

Can blind or deaf people read or write or read book's bible's and or reading book's?

Of course blind people can write stories! You don't have to see a computer screen or a piece of paper to write. They can dictate their stories to someone, or use voice recognition software, or even write in braille and have someone translate it into regular writing.

Is my child deaf?

That is actually quite a complicated question to answer. I am assuming that your partner has the ability to hear? It just depends on the genes that are dominant when the sperm and egg merge. A friend of mine is deaf and her daughter has full hearing abilities. It is possible but if the gene that causes the mother to be deaf is dominant over the gene that allows a person to be able to hear then the child will be deaf. But if the gene that allows the child to hear is dominant over the gene that will cause the child to be deaf then the child will be able to hear. If the mother has a family history of children being deaf it is possible, the liklihood of being deaf increases greatly if the father is deaf as well. I am sure that you can talk to your doctor to get a more specific answer. Good luck.

It also depends on what caused the mother's deafness. Deafness is not always genetically related. Only 10% of deaf children are born to deaf adults.

How do Deaf people feel about the word deaf?

"Deaf" is not a derogatory term, it merely describes the condition of being unable to hear. Since some people have a reduced ability to hear but do still have some hearing, the term "hearing impaired" would be more accurate for those people. However, the term "dumb" when used to describe people who cannot speak, is insulting (since it also means stupid). So deaf is OK, but deaf and dumb is not.

Do small holes in your ears make you deaf?

Each of the small inner ear bones is linked to other in sequence to transfer percussive information from the tympanum (eardrum) to the cochlea (which converts vibrations into neural signals). The three inner ear bones are connected end to and transfer vibrations in that way. Breaking one of these bones interrupts this transfer.

(It is equivalent to a game where three people whisper something to each other and the middle person is pulled out. The end person does not receive the information.)

What is the link between decibels and damage to hearing?

It depends also on the time of hearing.

"Permitted Noise Exposure Time Guidelines - SPL"

Sound pressure level Lp and permissible exposure time t:

115 dB = 0.46875 minutes (~30 sec)

112 dB = 0.9375 minutes (~1 min)

109 dB = 1.875 minutes (< 2 min)

106 dB = 3.75 minutes (< 4 min)

103 dB = 7.5 minutes

100 dB = 15 minutes

97 dB = 30 minutes

94 dB = 1 hour

91 dB = 2 hours

88 dB = 4 hours

85 dB = 8 hours

82 dB = 16 hours

Lower dBs are said to be harmless.
There is a Decibel Comparison Chart which states as follows

Weakest sound heard 0db

Whisper 30db

normal conversation 60 - 70db

Telephone dial tone 80db

city traffic, inside car 85db

train whistle at 500ft 90db

Subway train 200ft 95db

sustained expsure may

result in hearing loss 90 - 95db

Pain 125db

short exposure

permanent damage 140db

loudest sound possible 194db

permissable noise level exposure ranges from 90db per 8 hour day to 115db for a max exposure of 15 minutes per day
It depend on the person and on the time you are listening. Even 85 decibels are enough when you listen for a long time.

An impulse noise that's 120 db or higher can cause immediate damage. Things that produce sounds of that level would be gunfire, fireworks, or an explosion. I think I read somewhere that the loudest noise that the ear can hear is 194 db, which would cause a huge amount of damage to the ear, but I don't know if that would cause complete deafness. The only things that can possibly produce sound like that would be a rocket taking off or a sonic boom. Death of hearing tissue is at 180 decibels

What medical term for specialist who evaluates hearing loss?

A physician who studies hearing is called an auditory specialist. An audiologist is a specialist in the disorders of hearing who is not a physician, but has special training in this area.

How can you differentiate between age related hearing loss and neurosensory hearing loss?

Age related hearing loss or Presbycusis, is describing a possible cause of hearing loss that is best attributed by aging as the "possible cause". Sensorineural hearing loss is a description of a type of hearing loss determined by a hearing test. Confusing? Well, the easiest way is to describe it is : determine your age? can you best descibed as a older person? We can use a example, you may be you over 60 years old and have just had a hearing test and it has been been determined that you have a gradual decline in your hearing that is sensorinueral in nature. It may be described as a sign of aging hearing loss and you may need a hearing aid. Sensorineral hearing loss, however can affect anyone at any age, at any time suddenly or long term decline in your hearing. A easier way to understand is needing reading glasses as you get older, aging hearing loss means your hearing is changing do to possible age related conditions and a hearing aid can provide help to understand speech such as reading glasses helps with reading. You can still hear and you can still see, but not as well as you used to so a little help can make a world of difference. "Sensorineural" hearing loss is a description of hearing loss that is based on the area affected is the hearing nerves located in the inner ear (cochlea) loss. A hearing test can determine the type of loss and Hearing losses can decribed of three types Conductive-which means something is wrong with the mechanical parts of the hearing process. A example is a hole in the eardrum. Sensorineural- which means something wrong with the electrical parts of the hearing process. A example like measles. Mixed- is a combined hearing loss in both parts of the hearing process. Next step is to determine the possible cause of the hearing loss, in most cases there may be no obivious reason. So, Presbycusis may be used as possible cause and description of what would be reasonable and expected for a aging person. As we get older, we notice that a lot of body parts wear out from use and changes that we go through are more pronounced. For example. skin cuts may take longer to heal, knees and hips joints wear out, short term memory becomes less sharp. With the ears the hearing nerve cells (which we think, do not replace themselves) become worn out and become less dense or sparse just like the hair on the head of a older person. We understand that all parts of the hearing system wear out from use such as the eardrum, hearing bones, hearing nerves and most important of all the hearing part of the brain, that is the ability to understand speech and sound. All together that adds up to hearing loss due to aging.

How were deaf people treated through out history?

first nothing then hearing aids and now cocleara(not sure if that's how you spell it) Implants

What is one of the possible causes of conduction deafness?

A conductive hearing loss occurs when the outer or middle ear does not efficiently transfer sound to the inner ear. In the outer ear common causes include ear wax and foreign objects in the ear canal.

conductive hearing loss is caused by damage to the bones of the ear,or to the tymanic membrane(eardrum),or to the outer ear. Nerve damage is the only other kind of hearing loss you can have and that is caused by damage to the nerves in the cochlea..I was born without eardrums and have a conductive loss

Why was Helen Keller blind?

She became blind and deaf after a terrible, terrible fever at the age of two.
